Such a shame it's such a grey, miserable day here in Lancaster today. Mists and mellow fruitfulness. But without the fruitfulness. :)

I'm catching up fast now! there's all sorts of stuff going on out there it seems (I must be spending too much time indoors and online).
This is my favourite Lancashire Day event so far, from listings on the Friends of Real Lancashire website. A well known Lancashire tradition?
"A Champagne Breakfast to celebrate Lancashire Day"

Ah good! Another day to celebrate 8)
Is there going to be a national holiday to celebrate the occasion? My paternal granny came from Lancashire.
The Friends of Real Lancashire website says:
"On this day in 1295 the first elected representatives from Lancashire were called to Westminster
by King Edward I to attend what later became known as "The Model Parliament"."

Shaun, thanks for the link

Lancashire hotpot is a culinary dish consisting essentially of meat, onion and potatoes left to bake in the oven all day in a heavy pot and on a low heat. Originating in the days of heavy industrialisation in Lancashire in the north west of England, it requires a minimum of effort to prepare. It is sometimes served at parties in England, because it is easy to prepare for a large number of people and is relatively inexpensive.
There are many regional variations. It is frequently found listed amongst the usual pub grub dishes in hostelries around Britain. The basic recipe consists of a mix made up of meat, vegetables (carrot, turnip, potatoes, onion or leek) then covered with sliced potato or pastry. The type of meat to be used in a true Lancashire hotpot is a matter of some controversy, with many being of the opinion that it should be lamb (with optional lamb kidneys) and some thinking it should be beef. As much food can be added as will fit in the pot.
Flavour can be enhanced with seasoning; salt and pepper would be the most traditional, and any other ingredients available in the kitchen. Some stock is usually added to cover the contents while it cooks, though some recipes rely on a well sealed pot on a low heat to retain enough moisture within the meat, onion and potatoes.
The hot pot referred to is a brown pottery dish with straight sides used to cook casseroles in British cuisine. The basic recipe formerly included oysters at one point, when they used to be more affordable. Pickled red cabbage is often served as an accompaniment.
It is as (Betty's hotpot) also associated with the Rovers Return pub in the soap opera Coronation Street.

Thanks to Wikipedia, where else, I looked up a possible Manchester Day. I thought that it would be when Great Manchester was created and so became independent of Lancashire.
The year was 1974. The day would you believe? April the First ::)
:) Barbara

I know Manchester is in Lancashire ;D I just wondered if Manchester had it's own day?
Migky ;)

You want two days a year?
That's just greedy. ;D
-
There are two things wrong, the rose should be white,
That's Yorkshire folk for you.
Too tight to buy a red pencil and colour in their rose. ;D
-
As a true Lancastrian, born and bred in the great Paletine Town of Lancaster, I too extend my good wishes to al true Lancastrians, Forever the Red Rose County, even if I am in exile in the White Rose County, disgusting to think they call it God's Own Country, where did they get that from I wonder?
It is dull and damp here too, so take heart, sit back and enjoy that great Lancastrian pint of Mitchels 'Bomber', do you remeber the Bewery anyone? Cheers from Smelly ::)

Hi Migky,
Manchester annually celebrates St Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland, in seriously big style with its annual Irish Festival which is now established as one of the biggest Irish Festivals in Europe. Surely you don't need
a Manchester Day too. Next year's event commences on Friday 7th of March and runs to Monday 17th March.

I have been a member of Friends of Real Lancashire since its formation.
We raise our glasses to the Duke of Lancaster, God Save the Queen.
I am proud of my Lancastrian ancestry. I am not part of the Mickey Mouse adminstrative hoo haa that was formed in 1974. The County of Lancashire was never changed it has always been our Palatine County which makes it very different from the other Counties. In fact a lot of those Administrive Counties are now defunct, Merseyside was one of them that was abolished in 1984.

As genealogists we can't do justice to a day like this without celebrating our birthplaces - I was born in Waterloo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterloo%2C_Sefton
and spent my childhood in Crosby http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Crosby

Shaun ;D
My father in law was a publican so my OH has lived in a lot of neighbourhoods...He often talks about Sefton Park and Smithdown Rd and Crosby and Bootle...the Docks Road...and a few other places that I can't think of at the moment :P

All familiar territory Mab - my favourite pub in that part of the world is/was the "Volley" - The Volunteer Canteen in East Street Waterloo. http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/13/13521/Volunteer_Canteen/Waterloo

Shaun,
the internet has made it a very small world. Sitting here in Brighton, I posted a request for information on MIs in Macclesfield, that you were kind enough to answer, then I had a look at this thread to see one of my favourite pubs mentioned.
I was born in Liverpool and grew up in Crosby, and the Volley along with the Old Bank and the Victoria were regular watering holes.
Happy (Lancashire) days!
