Looking for Birthplace and Parents for Catherine Robertson,born Shetland 1840. Fathers first name Peter. The marriage certificate I have for Catherine states her father was a Teacher.
Catherine married Cornelius Roebuck,( b.Salford,Lancs. 1830) in Liverpool,Lancs,23 May 1864,and had 8 known Children.
How she managed to get so far south Is a mystery I would love to unravel.

Hi Ev. Thanks to your response,regarding Cornelius Roebuck yes he was married before to Elizabeth Dumbill,1851. As to Catherine's birthplace she is in the census as Caithness,but I have checked with the Scottish Records Office and there Is no trace. Why I have switched to Shetland Is that I remember that a G.Daughter of hers(now deceased)said she was born there. I have no Inkling of a middle name Ross,but one never knows.

i know through my own research that sometimes patrick is also
called peter in scotland
now it appears patrick/peter died before the 1851 census and as the
last child was born in 1842 it could have been when catherine was
young, so maybe she thought his real name was peter
on the 1851 this catherine(age 14) is staying with an uncle and aunt
william & williamina ross
now on the 1861 census(england) there is a catherine robertson(age 24) servant born scotland living with a david & cecelia clark regent road salford lancashire
i was hoping you might have something to connect this all up but as you
know its never that easy
do you know where cornelius was on the 1861 census ?

Ev, It seems a fair possibility that the Caithness Catherine could be her, seeing
that the Father was a Teacher,a doubt in my mind though is the birth date as It consistently crops up in my research as to being born in 1840 (Census & Death Certificate. I cant find Cornelius Roebuck in the 1861 census,it could be that his trade being a Journeyman Painter,he was in other parts of the country.

Catherine Ross Robertson was born in 1836 on the island of Stroma, which is part of Caithness. Her father Patrick (sometimes Peter) was a teacher. Catherine was with her family in the 1841 census, and with her aunt and uncle William and Williamina Ross in the 1851 census. I suspect Williamina is a maternal aunt, but yet to confirm!
I am almost certain that this Catherine is the same one who ended up in Liverpool. Can't give any reason why this would be the case, but I do know that Catherine's brother James died in Liverpool in 1858 - this was reported in the John O'Groat Journal (Caithness newspaper)
Catherine was my GGG aunt. I am descended from her brother John Mackay Robertson. I would like to make contact with her Roebuck ancestors if possible!

his father was Peter John Robertson who lived in Shetlands but died in New Zealand
