Can anyone here help me with information about Brockenhurst, before 1800? Specifically, I am looking for William STRICKLAND (or STICKLAND), who lived there. He had 4 children according to the parish records (which don't state the mother's name):
Hannah STRICKLAND b. 1769
Mary STRICKLAND b. 1772
Thomas STRICKLAND b. 1774
James STICKLAND b. 1778
There is also a death record for William on 05 04 1803, aged 83.
Does anyone have any connection to this family, or know where I might go about finding more information about them? (I know Thomas married Eliza SYMS 1815 and Mary married Thomas GATES in 1804).
If anyone could look up to see if they were mentioned in Comyn's, I would be grateful.
Thanks a lot!

There is also a mention of a Joan DAVIS, daughter of Thomas & Sarah DAVIS of Setley who married a STICKLAND and had moved away to London.

Cheers for that Bearkat. I don't suppose there is any indication who the STICKLAND in London was?
Any ideas on other sources I might try for this family?

Hi Vicky,
It wasn't expecting to see this post return! Interesting that you are connected to the Davis family. Can you tell me anything about them and the Stickland connection?
Thanks,
Owen

Hi Owen,
I know more about the House family which of one of the Davis family married. I know that Joan Davis married a Strickland. I have a link to her sibling Ann Davis who married Edward House. Ann moved out of her home she was born at and moved next door to set up home with Edward. All I know is from the Comyn's book and that says that Joan and Stickland had moved to London.
The Davis family was parents Thomas Davis and Sarah Gauntlett. They married 29/4/1766 at Brockenhurst.
They lived in Setley with their children - Sarah had moved also next door to her parents (she married Clarke but became a widow, then later married a David House as his 2nd wife) she had had 5 children with Clarke.
Rebecca Davis moved to the Weirs part of Brockenhurst and married John Parnell - after his first wife Ruth House had died after the birth of their only son.
Joan I have told you about.
Then I link to Anne Davis who married Edward House who lived next door with their own family.
Margaret David married Scott and moved to Christ Church.
Fanny Davis married Redege moved to Lymington.
Thomas David married Jane Burfort. - her parents were John Burfort and Jane Miller who later married George House. John Burfort died 1798.
This is from the Comyn's book and there is only one other Stickland listed and that is Mary Strickland who married Thomas Gates. She has a child out of wedlock called Mary Strickland born July 1797 and has 4 children Thomas, Jane, William and Louisa with Thomas.
Living next door is a Elizabeth Burfort born 1759 Widow - but as yet I have not found out who she is.
I have my House family tree from Brockenhurst in early 1800's back to early 1500's.
This is the best I can give you for now.
Hope it helps.

Hi Solsticedreamer,
Thanks for the post. I actually grew up only 6 miles or so from Brockenhurst in Everton. It doesn't seem like my ancestors moved around a great deal!
If anyone is aware of anything with the STICKLAND family I mentioned in the original post, I've not got any further information from what appears in this thread...
Thanks, Owen
