Can anyone help me confirm/disprove this story: that Faudel-Phillips, Lord Mayor of London in 1896 was one of ours.
According to the net, Sir George was born in 1840 in Surrey. His father was Sir Benjamin Samuel Phillips, b 1811.

William Phillips married Martha Hamper in Brighton in 1856. I have a note that his full name was William Tye Phillips, and that his father's name was Thomas, but I'm not sure where I got that information.
I also have some notes from the A2A site, as follows:-

A quick websearch for Faudel-Phillips shows them to be a distinguished Jewish family, Benjamin Samuel PHILLIPS having married Rachel FAUDEL in abt 1833.
Is there any Jewish connection in your PHILLIPS family?

				Thanks for your replies.
I think perhaps this must be just a family story, a mare's nest.  ;D
There is no jewish connection that I'm aware of.
In that case, perhaps somebody would be kind enough to give me some census information in William Phillips so I can work back.
Thanks,
Linda

My grandma always claimed to be related to the Phillips Lord Mayors of London -though how I don't know. She was Lavinia Phillips born Birmingham 1883.
Her father was  according to her birth certificate Samuel Thomas Phillips (designer) born London Tottenham about 1853 although I  cant find his birth registered, nor any trace of him (other than marriage cert for Birmingham 1872 to Sarah Ann Whittington) until 1891 census when he is a widower in Birmingham with daughters Charlotte, Elizabeth, Florence, Lavinia, Alice, Lilian and Leah
His marriage certificate gives his father's  name as also being Samuel Thomas Phillips, occupation 'gentleman' - of him too  I can find no trace.
With Whittington ancestors I think she was confused with Dick Whittingtonand his cat more like!!
I can't find a Jewish connection either
Do any of these names mean anything to you?  Thanks Frances
