Has anyone any information on the T Class submarine HMS Traveller. She was sunk in the Bay of Taranto off southern Italy on the 12th December 1941. I believe that all hands were lost, including my Uncle Eric Newbury P/SSX 19851 Leading Seaman.
I have found his name on the Naval Memorial on Portsmouth, and would like to find out more. :'(

Hi
I don't have any information I'm afraid, but just a couple of queries. Traveller was sunk in 1942, not 1941. You mention your uncle was on the Memorial at Plymouth. I take this to be the CWGC's Plymouth Naval Memorial? I cannot see his name listed there.

Hi there, many thanks for your reply, and correcton of the demise of the Traveller.
My Uncle Eric is o the Portsmouth Naval Memorial Panel 63 Column 1.
Strange thing, have checked with the Submariners Association and seen the crew names whenshe was lost. His name is not mentioned there, how come I wonder?
Any clues? Smelly

many thanks for that info. Curious fact has just emerged. Have checked with the Submariners Association, Roll of Honour for the crew on the Traveller when she sank, My Uncle erics name does not appear though, very strange, any ideas why? Smelly

I note that you give a different spelling of the surname than appears on the CWGC site. Do you know which is correct? I wonder whether any confusion arose there? If CWGC have it wrongly then they will correct it if you can prove the correct spelling. I would also try to have the name added to the database you mention.

Hi again Imber, thanks for message. I had great difficulty tracing my Uncle Eric, because no one knew the correct spelling of his name. I have found his wedding certificate to my Aunt and the correct spelling is Newbery, again my mistake. This is the first time I have used this site, only joined this morning, bear with me!
I can't think of any reason why his name is on the Portsmouth memorial with the date correct etc, and his name is not on the Roll of Honour in the records. Very strange. Cheers Smelly
