Can anyone tell me what dates these photographers were in business?
Daniel Jones 66 Bold Street and 11 Church Street
Kiesling Bros. 120 Bold Street
C Cockbain 21 Islington Liverpool
John Thomas 66 St Anne Street
David Lewis 126 Bold Street
this may help me identify people in old photos.
Thanks for any help

This site has lists over many years from the trade directories for Liverpool

thanks very much I have jsut checked that one out for one photographer (Cockbain) who is only listed in one year 1898 - surely he was in business longer than one year?
I will try to attach the photo in question. I think they may be two sisters who were born in 1871 and 1874 - making them 22 and 25 in 1898.
Do they look that age to you?

Well it certainly broadens the scope for the photo. I'll need to check out some 19 cent fashion I think
Thanks for your help

I had a go at cleaning it up for you

Although not all that clear the style of hats that they are wearing would appear to ones that were known as "three storeys and a basement" this style was fashionable in around 1887-1889. Also there is a suggestion of a kick up on the shoulder area of the sleeve seam on the bodice of the young woman on the left, which would indicate a date of about 1889.

now that's interesting - the clean up I mean. Any chance you could do anything with this photo or is it beyond redemption. so far I have this one dated somewhere between 1867 and 1880 (the time the photographer John thomas was at ST Anne St Lpool)
Sadly the X is on the original too ???

thanks for the fashion comments old Rowley. 1887-1888 would fit in nicely with who I think the girls are

Hi Cedas,
I agree with Rowley on the date for the first picture of the two girls.
The second photo of the group would definitely date from the 1860s - probably late 60s.
Cheers

well apparently the photographer didn't start on his own account till 1867 but if it were late 60s that would fit in with who I think they are. The older woman had died by 1871 census.
Thanks for your help

Hi there I'm currently researching Charles Cockbain. He was born in 1837 and died in 1888 so your pictures will be no later than that. His son Thomas Price Cockbain was also a photographer. Charles would have gone into business out of 16-18 Duke Street where his father had a Drapery business around about 1862. His last address before passing away was Islington, Liverpool.

Interesting. Thank you
