Hello Lisa
The marriage you have been looking at is on the IGI. However it is an entry submitted by another researcher rather than one extracted from the parish records and therefore has to be regarded less reliable.
The marriage I have found in 1902 on free BMD fits in with the census info found by Tati - ie Ada was not married in 1901. Also it fits in with this birth from Free BMD
Births Mar 1878
BLANK Ada Mary Kingsbridge 5b 207
When was the first child of Joseph and Ada born?

I'm having trouble finding the Blank family in 1881 - can anyone see them?
Marriage Dec 1875 Kingsbridge 5b 397
Robert Henry C Blank - Sarah Jane Foxworthy
-
the marriage of ada and joseph
I had this one written down as a note Marriage Sep 1902 Cary Joseph Grant Kingsbridge 5b 418
Also i had on notes
Birth Jun 1862 CARY Joseph Grant Newton A 5b 162
Birth Dec 1872 Cary Joseph Grant Newton A. 5b 174
I also had this as a note J G Cary Baptised 1872
J G Cary Baptised 1872 Final 1/4 October - December DISTRICT - Newton Abbott Devon England United Kingdom Vol 5b Page 174
Yet i was giving the date 1867 for Joseph grant cary birth maybe that was wrong?????
my grandfather was born aug 1914 albert collingwood cary one of 11 kids he had 5 brothers and 5 sisters including dorothy, ada, ruby, nora, lolly, joseph, william, alfred, we know he was one of the younger ones, all have passed away now so we have no one we can ask.

Hello Lisa
This is a list of births surname Cary in the Newton Abbot Reg District after 1890 (From Free BMD)
Births Sep 1895
Cary Robina Hamilton Newton A 5b 138
Births Dec 1895
Cary Louisa Annie D Newton A. 5b 130
Births Jun 1903
Cary Annie Augusta Newton A 5b 102
Births Jun 1911
Cary Beatrice M Newton A. 5b 84
Births Dec 1912
Cary Edward J Blank Newton A. 5b 149
Births Sep 1914
Cary Albert C Chadderblank Newton A. 5b 167
Robina is from a different family (checked in 1901 census). Louisa D is with her Cary grandparents (Joseph and Elizabeth). So, she could be your Dot but born before the marriage of her parents OR a grandchild through a different son.

Tati - I will have a search for the 1881 entry if it has not yet been found.

thanks barbara you have been a great help ;D
so maybe his wife was a blank hence the passing on of a name as ive come across that a lot in my family?
-
I don't think so Lisa - he's to be found a Robert C Blank in 1871 and according to the marriage I posted earlier his wife was Sarah Jane Foxworthy :)
-
There is definitely something to be investigated as to why Robert was sometimes Blank and sometimes Chadder.
I think what we ought to do now though is digest all the information that has been unearthed and make sure that it all hangs together.
My initial feeling is that you ought to buy the marriage certificate of Joseph and Ada as this will confirm the names of their fathers and their ages when they married.
More later!

hi again im going to note all this down then come back later after ive looked through everything i have
something else that my dad was told was ada chadder blank has some sort of family connection with 3 men all family members in a lifeboat disaster which i believe was the salcombe disaster it was a wooden rowing boat. ive never found any other lifeboat disaster in the devon area with 3 family members aboard
The surname for the men was foales
unsure if this is of any help at all? Ive added the website http://www.submerged.co.uk/salcombe%20lifeboat.php which does explain it all

Is this Robert and Sarah rg11 2181/71 12.

Lisa
You were querying, in one of your posts, the birth date of Joseph Grant Cary because you had a note of a birth registration in 1862 and another in 1872. There are indeed 2 registrations recorded on Free BMD. But I also found a death of a 4 year of Joseph Cary in Newton Abbot RD in 1866.
My suspicion is that this is the child registered as Joseph Grant Cary in 1862. It is quite likely that the parents gave another son, born in 1872, the same name. It could of course be that the Joseph Grants came from different families.
I think the DoB of 1867 for Joseph Grant came form the submitted entry to the IGI as did the info about his date of marriage.

i have to say thanks to everyone whos been replying really grateful for the help.
I had thought the same myself that possibly he could of been named after another child
I never found the death record and i searched for another family with
someone of the same name and never came up with anything, there are lots of carys in the torquay st marychurch and surrounding areas
I dont think its different families the elder of the two the father his mothers maiden name was grant, i think from memory and hes named his son after him.
The info was from the same site i believe, i just wish i kept records of where everything came from! A lady had helped me out on another site as well so it could of been via her

Oooh, Lisa, this is exciting! Ada Mary (nee Chadder Blank) and Joseph Grant CARY were my great grandparents too!!!!! I'm the granddaughter of William Robert CARY (born 1908) who was your grandfather's brother. Your grandfather was always know to me as my Mum's Uncle Collie (from his middle name of Collingwood).
I found your original message on this website quite by chance so have joined the forum in the hope that you get this message and reply and that we can get in touch.
I live in Bridport. I remember Mum's Uncle Collie living in Weymouth as did his siter (Aunty Dorothy) and possibly one other sister too - might've been Aunt Ada?????
