Title: Minshall/Jones- Oswestry
Post by: mins-jones1 on Sunday 18 November 07 19:08 GMT (UK)
Hi All, I'm new to this. I have got to a standstill. I am looking for information on David Jones (b.abt 1811) He married Mary Elizabeth Minshall (b. abt 1814 in Oswestry) 07.10.1835. He is listed in the 1841 Census as a publican on Willow st, Oswestry. But by 1851 he had disappeared. Mary and 3 of her children are cared for by "relief of the Parish" Can anybody help me in tracking him down? Did he die or did he abandon his family?

Thanking you in advance :)

Hi,

Trust you to have a relative with a name like Jones!! ;D ;D

Have you found any of them in 1861 - are they all in the same town?

What about their children - was there marriage gives any more details - did he sign any of their other certificates?

What about David's parents - any help

Cheers

Keith

Thanks for the reply.  I have all the family right into the 20th century it is just David Jones I cant find. He just drops out of sight. I have no Idea who his parents are. On the 1841 census he says he was not born in Shropshire so as you can imagine, Thousands of 'em all over the country thats not including any with lockers!!
I just thought that there might be a record somewhere of an Inn on Willow st in Oswestry in 1841 with a David Jones as its publican. Anybody know of a sight that I could start from? ??? ???

Hi Tracie

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

As someone who grew up in the Oswestry area (all be it on the Welsh side of the border) and having lots of Jones relatives, I sympathise  :-\

On the 1851 census, did it say whether his wife was a widow or not?

PS - Hi Keith  :D

Thank you for the lovely welcome.

Mary is still listed as wife on the 1851 census but her little girl is living with Marys mother and Mary just has the boys at home with her. She has moved from Willow street and is being looked after by the parish. Could this mean the workhouse? In 1861 she is still listed as wife but she is now working as a laundress. I suppose he could have been working away from home.

I am seriously considering getting to Oswestry and doing some hunting around ;D ;D

Hi Tracie

I'll PM you the e-mail of the  Oswestry Local Studies Librarian. He has given me masses of information. They have lots  of newspaper reports indexed.

Morda was the workhouse for Oswestry. I'm wondering if he might have done a runner or something. Their records don't start until 1913  :(

Hi Tracie :)

I been trying to find sight or your David here with no luck :(,
I lost one of mine in 1901, wife was listed as head, mar, but no man in the house, turns out he was in the infirmary at the time of the census,  however in your case to be in hospital for two censuses is hard to belive, I  have the oswestry parish registers pre ab 1813 here if you need any look up you are more then welcome,

Best wishes
Pete :) :)

P.S.  Any chance he may have been a naughty boy and been sent off :o :o :o

If it's Oswestry parish registers you want, I've got them coming out of my ears  ;D ;D ;D  but let Pete have a look. I have them on micro fiche. I think he has a CD (well I do too but I'm on my laptop and the CD is upstairs)  ;D

The Oswestry Library is the best bet though for a scandal  :o

Hi Tracie
We have messaged previously.
Since we last contacted I have found a little more info regarding your Minshall originally Minshull.
