Title: FLINN - Scotland
Post by: tullosboy on Sunday 18 November 07 12:53 GMT (UK)
James Flinn was born circa 1827. At this stage have no birthplace for him.

He was a confectioner who worked in the Newcastle region in England, any information on his birth or death ( believed to be in Montrose) would be appreciated.

Thanks

Saw those this morning Ann  :-\ but I was busy with another thread. I think the 1881 one looks the best bet - can't see anything in Scotland after 1851 so maybe he's in Northumberland 1861-1881.

Hi Gadget

well if we can find out who parents were will make it a lot easier.

Either wasn't born Montrose or was a non conform which is why not shown on speeps

Cheers

It's only a possible death in Montrose though as  Iread it - only thing we have to go on is him working as a confectioner in Newcastle. That's the one I think I found on the 1881.

Too many births (or none ) to do anything else.  We really need a bit more info from Tullos :-\

I read it born or died Montrose. The only death in Montrose for a James Flinn made him 95 when he died but born 1781 so that can't be him. I am not in any way discounting what you are saying about 1881 just to be very clear.

No, I know Ann, but It's only a possible - so we have to work back from Newcastle - nothing showing for births or deaths Montrose that I can see - I tried Fl*n* .

Hi everyone,

I think I see him in 1861. The Ancestry transcription is confusing, so maybe a check of the original image is in order? ???

Address: Muir St, Dalziel, Lanarkshire
Elizabeth d, f, wife, 1, -, Larkhall, Lanarkshire
James Flinn, m, visitor, 37, baker (journeyman), Bellshill, Lanarkshire

I can't see him in the next census (Scotland or England).

It does tie in with the 1841 and 51 that I found, hume  :)
In 1881 it says that he's married - wish I knew to whom  ???

Also, I've been thinking of Scottish places that sound like Montrose - Melrose, Fortrose.... any more?

Been through 1871 and 1891 again, but can't see anything. I think we need some details to when and where he married, and a rough guess of when he died. :-\

I think we've all asked but I'm not sure if Tullosboy knows either. He was on at 2 pm today so he would have seen our postings and requests  :-\

Hi Hume

It seems a total mistranscription..He is in the home of
James Millar, 28, carter, b. Hamilton
Catherine, wif, 25, b. Paisley
Elizabeth (do), daughter, 1, b. Larkhall

James Flinn is shown as married.

Sorry for the delay in coming back to you!

As usual, I never cease to be amazed at what turns up and how helpful you all are!

Can confirm James marriage to one Ann Thomson circa 1852 in Aberdeen. Have been through Familysearch have found three James Flinns born around 1827, two in Ireland, one in Aberdeen, so at this stage cant confirm which one he is. The Lanarkshire connection mentioned is interesting, will follow that up. I do believe that he is the man in Newcastle on cencus night 1881.

This is where the Montrose bit comes into it, I did find a death of a James Flinn, Journeyman in Montrose ( I dont have it with me at the moment, so cant be exact) circa 1886? But the age is wrong, then again anythings possible!

Thanks again!
