Hi Guys
I am hoping someone can help me. I have found the births of a branch of my family but nothing else..... ie death or marriage. I don't know if anyone out there has a resource for it but here goes.
Parents
Edward Farrell and Mary (unknown)
children
Robert J Farrell b1836 NSW, Australia
Edward Farrell b1837 NSW, Australia
George T Farrell b1839 ~
Annie E Farrell b1842 ~
Joseph Farrell b1843 ~
Thomas Farrell b1845 ~
John Farrell b1848 ~
Thomas Farrell b1849 ~
The only info l have got was that Annie married a James McCreadie in 1874 and died after 1892 and before 1908.Also one of Annies children married and died in Western Australia.
A possibility is a marriage in NSW for the guys parents
Edward Farrell m Martha M Burrowes 1833 in NSW as perhaps her middle name was Mary.
What l really need is a death for one of the children as it may give a clue to Edwards marriage.

A death certificate of a child will not give information about their parents marriage - but should give the mother's maiden name - if it is known by the informant.
The death of either Edward or Mary would give details of marriage place and at what age, but only if the informant knows. Should also list their children so you know if you have the right death.
The NSW indexes are on line, free to search.

You can get a transcription done cheaper than a certificate purchase.
The early records, pre civil registration, are also available on microfilm for anyone to look at.

The baptisms that you have listed would be available on the pre civil film, if you cannot get access to same a pre civil transcript is only $10 - but it may not contain the mothers maiden name. For a lesser fee you can ask the transcription agent to check if the maiden name is given.

I have since found l was barking up the wrong tree.
i found her death .
Annie Emily McCready nee Farrell died 1899 Perth WA. Born 1851 Bathurst NSW. Parents James Farrell and Eleanor Bassett.
And again another problem. I have had a look at NSW bdms and there are quite a few children born to James and Ellen Farrell.....too many. So l have tryed to fing James and Ellens marriage and the only one l have found is a James Farrell and Ellen Maquire not Bassett.
any ideas ????????

Hello there
I did notice this birth on the NSW online BDM's
V18422103 133/1842 FARRELL MARY father JAMES mother ELINOR

I am slightly confused about the "too many children born to James and Ellen Farrell"
In the mid 1800s I can only see three (am I missing some?)
1848 Catherine
1851 Anne
1855 Jane
As these are all before civil registration there may well have been others whose records have not made it to the NSW registry.
From 1877 there appear to be 2 families, one located in Sydney, the other initially in Mudgee. IF the Mudgee pair moved to Sydney you would need death certificates to separate the families.
If Anne born 1851 is the person you are researching, a death certificate for either of her parents may (but only may) provide information about their names.
The marriage between James Farrell and Ellen Maguire was in 1853 so if the three children above had the same parents, it is unlikely to be this couple. There is no location given for the births, so looking at the AVRI - this is the location for the first two
Bathurst; Kelso, St Michael's; Co. Bathurst, Roman Catholic
while Jane was baptised at Sydney, St James', Roman Catholic
The 1853 marriage was at Sydney, St Marys
It may be that your James and Ellen/Elinor were married before they arrived in Australia. Checking immigration records may give some information. Again, depending on when they died, death certificates for James and Ellen may give place of marriage and/or time spent in Australia. Unfortunately, there seem to be a number of possible records that could be the death of James and Ellen.

Yes Trish l had those births plus another in 1842...Mary to James and Elinor Farrell. Whether this is the same family l don't know.
But looking at the deaths there are a lot to James and Ellen Farrell so whether or not they had more children that were not recorded would be a guess.
And yesl don't think the Ellen Maguire marriage would be mine.
I take it that the AVRI doesn't give the mothers name.
The Mudgee Farrell's l would guess are possibly mine. It is not far from both Bathurst and Orange where Annie married and Catherine died. Annie husband also lived and worked at Wellington which too is in the general area.
I have looked at some immigration records but no luck as yet. But l am looking for a married couple and who knows they possiby could of married interstate.
Probably the only thing l can do is guess on a death cert. I have never applied for one from NSW. If per chance l guess the right one will they give his/her parents name and any known children ?

Hi Robert
Just a couple of things - the AVRI is basically a copy of the BDM records - so it only has the same parents (given names only) as per the NSW BDM. It does give the church for baptisms/marriages/burials when this is missing from the NSW records - not sure why they miss it sometimes and include it sometimes. The parish for the 1842 birth is
Sydney ( Parish Not Stated), Roman Catholic
If you are going to start guessing some death records, I suggest you read up on the transcription agents. They will provide a lesser fee to check records for certain details. You can list the records in sequence for them to check. Thus said, there are quite a few in this case, and given the dates, the information you need to verify a death (e.g. name of wife) may be missing. Even if you purchase a full transcription, it is still cheaper than the registry certificates.

Until the early 1900s the information on NSW certificates is variable - although the detail you mention (parents, children) is supposed to be on the certificates it is not alway there. If parent names are on the index record, they will be on the certificate/transcript (although there is still a possibility that the mother's maiden name may be missing). If parent names are not on the index, they will not be on the certificate/transcript. According to the comment here, forms were not used until 1918 for the collection of the information - which may be why some data is missing.

Death certificate information is also very dependant on the knowledge of the informant
I've checked a couple of early certificates I have
1879 - gives parents, marriage details & time in NSW - gives number of children of each sex, but not names. My only earlier death records for NSW are burials (pre 1855) which give name age & preacher. Little else
1905 - death certificate contains all details including names & ages of all living children
Re interstate marriage - I did check NSW TAS VIC and WA which are the 4 states on the AVRI and didn't find anything that looked suitable

Thanks Trish
All info very helpful. I am going try immigration records first and then l'll do the death cert thing. But as you know that being a common name there's quite a few. I wish he had a name like Aloyouis or something.
thanks again
Rob
