It was interesting to see Woodley as my grandfather used to write to an address in that location in the early 1900s. When I tried to access info I was told that I would need to contact the Cheshire Record Office.
I do not know if there are two places named Woodley

Hello Gatacre
This is one of the problems I have been having with my Cleggs, I believe the boundery changed at some point to Cheshire.

Dylan,
I have asked the local studies in Manchester if Woodley was ever in Lancashire as I am interested in whether it changed with the new county boundaries.. I have been informed that it will take some days for a reply.
Interestingly. I am both a Clegg by marriage and descent but mine came from Rochdale

I have just received the following from Manchester Local Studies. Hope it clarifies the situatio re. the Woodley location.
Woodley is historically part of the county of Cheshire. It was part of the parish of Stockport and the township of Bredbury (See http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/chs/bredbury.html)
In 1974 it became part of the newly formed County Borough of Stockport.
Most records relating to this area will be held at Stockport Archives (at Stockport Central Library) or Cheshire Record Office.
We hold some methodist church records for Woodley (it is part of the Manchester Methodist District). A list of what we hold can be found at http://www.manchester.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?categoryID=448&documentID=464
This is interesting

Dylan,
Looking at Williams son, born 1852 in Newton, are you aware that Newton by Hyde came under the Ashton under Lyne registration district until 1923. And, although Ashton under Lyne was in Lancashire, all the BMD records are at the Cheshire BMD website at http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk
You say that you have William Clegg in the 1861 census, being born Woodley c1822. I assume it is this one:

Checking on marriages for William CLEGG, this one looks interesting:
Dec 1858 at Rotherham 9c/586 there are four people married who are named:
William Clegg, Hannah Hobson, Joseph Longbottom, Martha Ibbotson
In the 1861 Census there is a Joseph & Martha Longbottom, with a 1 year old daughter, indicating a recent marriage ?
Therefore giving good likelyhood to the 1858 marriage of William Clegg and Hannah Hobson, showing at the above 1861 census, with Hobson Stepdaughters.
It looks to me like William was married before 1852 and had the child John to a different mother, then remarried in 1858 to Hannah Hobson, and then had four further children.
In the Cheshire BMD there is a William marrying:
Ann HEATON at Mottram in Longdendale in 1844
and
Jane P BUCKLEY at Marple, Stockport in 1849
In 1851 there is a William & Jane Clegg (nee Burkley) living in Ashton with Jane's mother Ann Burkley. (note the slight spelling difference), with no children of their own.
At the Cheshire BMD there is a John CLEGG born in 1851 at Newton & Godley, Tameside ref: NEW/10/48
Although at FReeBMD there are 3 possible births:
Q3 1851 John CLEGG. Ashton 20/110 or 20a/110
Q4 1851 John CLEGG. Ashton 20/80
Q4 1852 John CLEGG. Ashton under Lyne 8d/44?
Maybe a few things there to follow up ?

Many, many thanks to everyone for all the information you kind folk have sent me, the marriage of William to Hannah Hobson is definitely my husbands line, they were his G Granparents so now I have something I can work on.
