John INDIAN was born to William INDIAN and Ann HARDY Indian on 07 February 1846 in Farnberry, Alston and Garrigall, Cumberland. I have no information at this time on Ann HARDY, and all that I have on William INDIAN is that he was a miner.
John INDIAN married in 1870 in County Durham; his residence at that time was Bishop Auckland; his wife was Eliza Ann ELLIS; his occupation was miner and later agent.
If anyone connects to the INDIAN - HARDY line, I'd love to hear from you.

Laurie

Hi LaurieA
I am new to RootsChat but I am interested the Indian family. The line I am following is Ann Indian born c1840 - parents William Indian c1813 Alston & Ann Hardy c1821 Kirkoswald - marr. 1837 Alston.
Ann Indian marr George Pattinson - 1865 Auckland Saint Andrew - Co. Durham and then William Forster 1874 Co. Durham.
According to the info that I have managed to find Ann c1840 must be sister to your John. I have collected all of the census' that are available but am interested in anything to do with this family especially earlier generations.

Hi and welcome to rootschat.
Unfortunately Laurie has not be on rootschat for some years now. He may respond to your post here but if not then your only hope is to send him a personal message (click on the scroll under his name) and hope that the email address has not changed in the meantime. However, new members are not able to use our pm systmem until they have 3 posts. Reply to this and you have one more. You can use our search rootschat facility at the top of the board to see if anyone else has posted about the family or look at the Surname Interests Table.
I do hope you manage to make contact

If you go on to freebmd and only put births indian and alston into the search panels, you will get all the info you supplied to us plus a thomas hardy indian which can only have come from this paring. You can request certificates for all the references and with a name like indian probably follow him down line through them but be careful cos there were 3 johns born and 1 death so you need to winnow which one belongs to which.
Andrea, do I get extra points for "winnow"?

You certainly do - anything that separates the wheat from the chaff is worthy of a point!

My deepest apologies - I posted here and didn't come back, an oversight, but quite rude and for that I'm sorry for all who posted help.
Yes, your Ann does sound like the sister to William Indian, and I've made progress and would be happy to share. Are you looking for any specific records or connections?

Cromwell, here is what I have using a variety of sources, sometimes only an index or census, as I don't yet have all the birth, marriage, and death records.
William INDIAN was baptized 09 Jul 1813 in Alston, Cumberland, England. He married Ann HARDY on 23 Nov 1837 in Alston; both fathers were named Thomas. William died 02 Dec 1871 in a mining accident in Auckland, Durham, England. I believe that it was Ann, his widow, who married William FOSTER/FORSTER (not sure which spelling it should be). The reason I say this is that if you look at the 1881 census in Tanfield, Durham, England, for William FOSTER and his wife Ann, he has a step-son Jacob. Jacob was the son of William INDIAN and Ann HARDY, and the ages fit.
Children of William INDIAN and Ann HARDY include:
1. Susannah INDIAN b. c1839, m. Thomas PATTINSON, no known children to them.
2. Ann INDIAN b. c1840, m. George PATTINSON, children include Jane Ann b. c1869, Susannah b. c1872, Mary E. b. c1875, Hannah b. c1877, and George M. b. c1884.
3. Margaret INDIAN b. 1842, no further information.
4. John INDIAN b. 1846 Nenthead, m. 1872 Saint Andrew Auckland, emmigrated 1888, settled in Scranton, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania where he died in 1915. His children include William 1872-1872, Ann Elizabeth 1873-1873, Hannah 1875-1966, Edith Ann 1881-1885, George William 1884-1957, Thomas Ellis 1886-1926.
5. Esther INDIAN b. 1848, m. John GITTINS, children include William Reece b. c1874, Margaret Jane b. c1877, George b. c1879, Emily Ann b. c1881, Susannah b. c1883, Mary b. c1886, John b. c1889, and Thomas b. c1892.
6. William INDIAN b. 1849, m. Barbara BLACK, children include Elizabeth b. c1879, William b. c1881, Winnifred B. b. c1886, Lucy b. c1888, John b. c1890.
7. Thomas Hardy INDIAN b. 1852, m. Mary A. EVANS, emmigrated 1881, living first in Scranton and settling in Covington Township, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania where he died in the 1920s. His children include Thomas W. b. c1875, John b. 1877, Jacob b. 1880, Mary Ann b. 1882, and Emma b. 1899.
8. Mary INDIAN b. 1854, m. Lancelot SLOWTHER, emigrated 1882, settled in Scranton, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania, where she died in childbirth. Her children include George W. b. 1873, John b. 1876, Jane A. b. c1878, Susannah b. c1880.
9. Emily J. INDIAN 1859-1878
10. Jacob Hetherington INDIAN b. 1861, m. Dinah CHRISTOPHER, children included John C. b. c1890, Thomas S. b. c1891, Lily E. b. c1893, Winifred B. b. c1895, and Beatrice M. b. c1897.
I hope this helps. The children of William and Ann were all born in Alston, Cumberland, England, some of them settling in the United States, some remaining in Cumberland, others moving to County Durham.

Bob, this is the challenge with this family. It is a large family, and the same names are used, which makes it hard to sort out who's who. Thomas Hardy INDIAN--they chose the name to help us out down the road :)

Hi Laurie
Thank you for getting back to me and for the information I now have another country, USA to explore and other sources. I hope you don't mind me asking but do you think that there is a connection between William Indian and Thomas Indian/Susanna Havelock, or am I just grasping at straws in my haste to delve further back. I am struggling a little with this sight because of my own lack of knowledge(or Savvy) on the best way to negotiate my way around but I will get there eventually. I have found the folks on this sight extremely helpful and patient with an old thicky like me.

Hi Cromwell.
Yes, I do indeed believe there's a connection. Now, please keep in mind that I began documenting this line with the most current generation, which for me means staring in the United States and then working back into England. Not everything has been proven, but I have made connections that I believe I will be able to prove, mostly as finances allow. My Descendants Of John Indian outline may be of help to you. I'm going to figure out how to post it and will be right back with it.
-
I can take this 10 generations but that would include many who are / may be living.
It also gets very long and not all is documented yet, so this may be of the most help.
Remember, it is not all documented yet, so verify anything (ask first though, I do have
a source of some sort for everything I list.

There are those who believe Susannah INDIAN was born 1789 and died 1831, a daughter of John Indian
and Margaret Makepeace. I’m not convinced and have not yet researched this fully, but there is a burial
for a Susannah Indian in 1831 that I believe to be the wife of Thomas son of John.
-
Cromwell,
I'd be delighted to hear what you have, if you don't mind sharing. This family intrigues me, in part because the name Indian was unusual enough that I do believe all in Counties Durham and Cumberland were related, even if distantly. My direct line is John, his son Thomas, Thomas' son William, William's son John. I have found that the Indians in Lackawanna County are all related, and some scattered, setting in Delaware County, Pennsylvania; Covington Township, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania; New Jersey; New York.
Thank you,
Laurie

Hi Laurie
Thank you yet again for your most generous response to my simple question.
I feel that I am a complete fraud but let me try to explain.
I am a complete amatuer at the Family History game even though I have been trying to resolve my own families history for more years than I care to remember. A friend, whose wife in the long run must be some kind of a relative to you (extremely distant) asked if I could have a go at his wife's Family Tree. Not getting very far with my own I agreed, after telling him that I did not promise any success. After some initial digging around on the internet I came across a marriage that at first made me howl with laughter(no offence meant). It was for GEORGE PATTINSON c1835 Alston-Cumberland and one ANN INDIAN c1840 Alston-Cumberland. I must have a weird sense of humour but the fact that George married Ann Indian tickled me somewhat. After that I was hooked and just had to see how far this surname would take me.
I proceded to check the census' 1841 - 1900 for England and was amazed at the amount of information there was regarding the various branches of this family. I did not know that the family had emmigrated but thanks to you I now find that the family INDIAN has gone back to AMERICA. It is like someone saying "Taking coals to Newcastle". In case you haven't heard of this saying it comes from near to where I live in the North East of England and the last thing you would consider doing is taking coals to Newcastle because it was at one time one of the main ports for coal transport to the world.
I am sorry if this is long winded and not of Family History value but I feel that I must explain to you how I come to be chasing INDIANS. I am very serious about research and will do my utmost to verify all my information but at this moment in time I am just trying to assemble some details so that when I do go to the local Records Office at Durham I will have some names, dates and places to point me in the right direction.
The lady who might be one of your distant cousins has ANN INDIAN as her GG Grandmother, not that she knows this yet. So Laurie you are way ahead of me in the research game concerning this family but I am confident when I do draw the information together and surprise her, I will leave her in no doubt that it is not all my work but yours and other kind folk. I f you feel that can forgive me and help in any other way I will be truely thankful.
Regards

Cromwell, thank you :) I'm enjoying your response. Once you get what you need for your friend, would you mind putting us in touch? And please, if you locate more records, I'd love to hear what you 've found and where, if I may be so bold.

Just to put everyone up to date, there are no Indians or Trathers in local phone book so they all either emigrated, died out or went ex directory. However there is a Slowther listed.
Asking locally there seem to be no indians or trathers in the area.

Hi Laurie
If and when I sort myself out and get to the Durham Record Office (In the very near future) you will be the first to get any info that I come across. I take it that I am not in the dog house with you then.
Thanks & regards

In the dog house? Good heavens, no, not at all. You said you had an interest in the Indian family, and honestly, I don't care much what the interest is if we can collaborate :) Many people who are part of the family aren't much interested, so any interest is welcomed. Thanks for thinking of me when you head out there!

Thank you, Bob. The Slowthers came to America as well, at least the Indian-Slowther family. How interesting that there are no Trathans or Indians remaining! I appreciate you checking that out :)

Laurie, I am struggling with this Rootsweb chat business but I notice your interest , together with SABA's, in the Indian family.
I am a descendant of the family and would be interested to know where you and SABA are at the moment with the timeline.
-
Hi! Timeline: late 1700s - today :)
I've been in touch with SABA and also with several other INDIAN descendants in Australia, England, Germany, and some in the US. I'd be happy to compare notes with you.

Last entry on my family tree is the marriage of John Indian x Margaret Makepiece @ Alston 1784. This is on the "tree" compiled by a family member. There are couple of inconsistencies but still a good place to start.
I have not checked that marriage but looking at the Alston marriages on Genuki I find no Indians(red or otherwise) mentioned before this date! Suspect he may have been a Cornish tin miner who moved to the area. There is an INDISIN which i believe to be a corruption of INDIAIN as records checked do not appear to even feature INDISIN as a surname!
I am stuck here! I pick up Indiain/Endean in Cornwall around Ladock area but have nothing specific.
