Hi
I'm not new to family work - am doing some family history for a friend and am totally stuck! I could do with some advice on this please!
I have a birth or Ethel Audrey Ball, 25 Febuary 1916, Dawley, Madeley - her mum and dad were Isaiah Ball and Florence Ball - formerly (what looks like) Turner.
So I've tried to find their marriage, have done lots of searching - and have found two marriages of an Isaiah Ball, one is 1916, Ethel May Tudor, same area as above - I've got their marriage certificate and it isn't the right couple.
Then I've found another marriage of an Isaiah Ball to a Florence Lane - 1908, thought with a Florence I had found the right couple as it is the right area, but then I got their marriage certificate now and her surname on marriage was Lane and it was written that she was spinster....
I've double checked the years, and am totally stuck on this one - do any of you think there is a chance that Florence Lane fibbed about her "condition"?
I know the Ball family came from Horsehay in Dawley and that is where this marriage was.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated! :)

To quote Conan Doyle - "When you have eliminated the impossible, whats left - no matter how improbable - is the answer ... "
Not unknown for peeps to be economical with the truth on Certificates ..... otherwise you may have to assume they didnt marry at all ?

He was a bachelor, lived in Horsehay common
She was a spinster, lived in Dawley
Witnesses were a John Napasar and Phoebe Bailey
So no family which is a bit strange!
Newf - possibly they didn't marry!
Oh I hate doing this work and being stuck like this!!!!
Any other idea's would be great!

In 1901 there are lots of Florences (popular name), living in Dawley, including a Florence Turner aged 15 living with her aunt, and that Florence Lane aged 17 living with parents Thomas and Harriet, so possibly just haven't found the right marriage yet?

Hi all :)
There is a Florence Lane with correct details on the 1901 census in Dawley. I've traced her back and her parents were married before her birth (and mum wasn't called Turner :()

John head m 49 Carter in Iron Works
Fanny wife m 54
John H son s 29 Plainer in Iron Works
Isaiah " s 27 " "
Alfred " s 19 Plater "
all born Horsehay
and full details for Florence Lane:
1901 RG13/2524 fol.52 p.11
Blues Hill, Dawley
LANE
Thomas W head m 51 Coal Miner Salop Dawley
Harriet wife m 37 Stafford Cannock

perhaps it's the right marriage and the maiden surname is a mistake on the birth certificate?

Chris, do you know if Ethel had a brother? There's a birth on freebmd for a Harry Ball, Dec 1913, and his mother's surname was Lane, so if he is her brother..that makes the marriage correct??

Thanks so much for searching Barbara and Tati...
Barbara - the birth you have found for a Harry Ball is in 1813, unless you have done a typo (haven't we all!) this is 100 years before the Ball family I'm looking at!! However, I'm very interested in the 1901 census details you have got - so will do some researching on Florence Lane and Isaiah Ball.
The problem I have is I still can't 100% confirm that Florence Lane was a Florence Turner - as per her and Isaiah's daughter's birth certificate in 1916.
I've searched and double searched for marriages involving a Isaiah Ball.....

No that's a slip of the finger, ::)
it's 1913 or I wouldn't have asked if it was her brother! (corrected now) Also mothers' maiden names aren't given until 1911 :) If you look on freebmd you'll be able to get the reference number
