Title: Burns
Post by: nealc on Wednesday 29 December 04 19:47 GMT (UK)
I am researching my ancestry. My mother's maternal grandfather was Edward Burns. He was born in Killyleagh around 1856. At some point he emegrated to Liverpool before he ended up in Rhode Island, USA.

Hi

I have Burns form County Down who came over and settled in Glasgow mid 1800s.

James Burns married Mary Ann May but to date I have only found one brother Hugh who came over and joined him.
James's parents were Arthur Burns and Margaret Devlin. Mary's parents were Alexander May and Charlotte Brisbane

Regards

Alcluith

Thank you for your input. My Edward's father was Redmond and mother was Charlotte Savage. The latest info that I have has them living in Down in 1864 as listed in Griffiths Valuation in the civil parish of Loughinisland.

My great grandmother Ann McCabe seemed to have a connection with a Burns family. Her sister Bridget and brother Henry were living as boarders with two different Burns families(Miles & Patrick) in Cleator, Cumberland, England in 1881. Everyone was from Ireland and working in the mines. Has anyone come across the McCabe name in their research. Ann McCabe married Richard Sloane and they were most likely from County Down but settled in Cleator until Ann died and then the family came to the USA.

Hello all you Burns researchers.

Please check the Glenravel Timelines, which are a collection of newspaper stories at http://www.glenravelonline.com/home/ and you will find many references to the Burns family.  Here is a selection but there were many others, especially Patrick, Daniel and John.

Aug 1897 - "Edward Burns was carges with seriously assaulting his wife by striking her on the head with a box.  His wife did not want to press charges, as they were both under the influence of drink at the time.  As the prisoner had a number of previous convictions he was sentenced to three months in goal."

Mar 1856 - "Agnes Burns who is charged with the murder of Margaret Withers has made a full confession of her guilt.  She said that her sister Mary West held the deceased womans hands and put a string around her neck, while she (Burns) was choking her victim." :o

Mar 1856 - "Agnes Burns has been convicted of the death of the Saintfield woman, Margaret Withers.  Sentence of death has been pronounced on he accused.  The date set for her execution is 25th April."

There are many more stories (tip use the EDIT, FIND facility) to find references to Burns.
