Post by: Ringrose on Saturday 10 November 07 10:56 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know where Omega Terrace was in relationship to the modern map of Fulham? My grandfather and family lived there in 1881.
Thanks

It can be pinned down a bit more tightly by looking at The Enumerator's District Description for NW Chelsea, District 10.

The 'beat' the enumerator lays out says this:-

#s 256 to 178 (junction) Kings Road

#s 1 - 4 Omega Terrace

#s 1 -5 Alpha Terrace

#s 1 -53 Blenheim Street

#s 1 - 4 Markham Terrace

#s 1 - 12 Brewer Street

#s 22 - 33 Upper Manor Street

If that doesnt help, we can look at adjcent districts for any higher #s in Omega Terrace, and see other street names ....

 :)

#s 1 - 4 Markham Terrace

#s 1 - 12 Brewer Street

#s 22 - 33 Upper Manor Street

Taking this information, together with my 1862 Stanford's map as compared to a modern map, this places Omega Terrace somewhere on the north side of King's Road between what is now Sydney Street and Markham Street:

http://tinyurl.com/2aph87 (use tools to zoom in)

Upper Manor Street (as was) is now the part of Chelsea Manor Street which runs to the north of King's Road

Blenheim Street (as was) is now Astell Street and Burnsall Street, again to the north of King's Road

Markham Terrace is likely to have been close to Markham Square and Markham Street, again, both to the north of King's Road

Brewer Street I can't find in 1862, but the area between Upper Manor Street and Blenheim Street was occupied by the Anchor Brewery, so Brewer Street may have been connected with that.

I don't see Alpha or Omega Terrace in 1862, but they may have been rows of properties on, or slightly set back from King's Road itself.  In 1862 there were terraces named Manor Terrace and King's Road Terrace which fitted this description.

Omega Terrace is now 8, 10, 12 and 14 Burnsall Street Chelsea.  I have a map showing Omega Terrace.

2 Omega Terrace (now 10 Bursall Street) was later occupied by Diana Dors and has a blue plaque.

Some of my wife's relatives were also at 1 Omega Terrace in 1881 - there were several households sharing in a house that is now worth £4.5million!

I came to the conclusion that 1 Omega Terrace was 8 Burnsall Street some years ago, I recently saw the blue plaque for Diana Dors on the next door house and decided to double check my findings. I’ve not seen this so am pleased others agree. The reason I was also interested is because my g.grandmother was born there in 1878. Small world.

The "status" of your post does not allow attachments - had snipped Blenheim St from from Goad's 1887 Insurance map - premises are numbered. Shows both Omega and Alpha Terrace within Blenheim St.
Will post URL but suspect it will deliver search screen rather than view of Blenheim St?

Added - search screen delivered. Zoom in on Blenheim St on right hand map and click on "Use this overlay"'

On the map that HT has linked to in reply #10 there is a large label over the area that says "Charles Knowles & Co
Paper Hanging Factory".

In the 1910 Valuation survey, the ownership of 1-3 Omega Terrace is a little confusing, but it definitely refers to a C Knowles deceased, Executors of C Knowles, and also C.G Knowles. By this date the large building behind Omega Terrace is labelled 'Motor Works'. Chas. Knowles and Co. are occupiers of the nearby premises on the corner of Jubilee Street and Kings road.

In the survey the houses at nos 1-3 are described (under no. 3) as:
Quote
Brick built stucco double fronted house on East side of Terrace comprising:—
Top flr. 2 Rooms. Gd flr 2 - Rooms Bst 2 Rooms
Old drains(?). Good order.

Just taking the 1911 census as an example,  no.1 has two households while nos 2 and 3 both have three households, suggesting that there was one household per floor.

No. 4 Omega Terrace was in a different league, being recorded as "house shop premises".
Quote
Brick built shop & upper part on
East side of Terrace comprising:—
Top flr, 2 Rooms
Gd. Flr. Shop & backroom
Fair order

No 4 was described as a “snug little premises” when advertised in a newsaper for sale as a tobacconists in 1865. The house sold for £1.2 million  in 2007.
