Thought Rootschatters might find this site interesting.
"Small and Special is a collection of resources relating to the early years of The Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street, England’s first in-patient children’s hospital. Here you can trace a patient, learn about childhood diseases, or investigate a member of the medical staff."
http://www.smallandspecial.org/
Vey interesting for family history and medical research - fascinating

I found a relative on there last night -- you don't get the case history (only admission and discharge) even once you've registered, but I would never have known otherwise that this relative had a condition for which she was treated in the capital.
You can search just by place (without surname) -- this is what I did, as I'm interested in pretty much everyone from my small home town.

Hi bearkat,
This site seems to have vanished! Any ideas how to find it?
Nanny Jan
-
Google - Great Ormond Street Hospital - admission records database .... Nanny Jan ... then cache Small and Special !!
Annie :)
-
Is it me, or doesn't that work ? I keep getting back to the small and special site with the business woman with the blue folder ?
Nothing to do with GOSH !!
-
That's a shame - it seems to have gone.
I've come across quite a few websites that have expired recently. The www. is a fantastic but websites only continue if paid for. Some have just moved and it's a case of tracking them down.
The wayback machine is a fantastic site for finding old websites
http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
It doesn't seem to help with smallandspecial though. :(
-
It's you Lydart !! :) :) :) ;D
try again ..... Google - Great Ormond Street Hospital - admission records database .... then click on (which should be the second one on the Google page !! ) Small and Special cached :)
-
It doesn't work for me. :(
-
How weird ? ... I keep trying it and it works for me ...... :-\
-
I can get to the home page but searching takes me back to that woman with the folder. :(
Nanny Jan
-
Nope ... still cant get it !
-
Maybe it's the way I'm explaining it !! .... it's the Scouse !! ::) ::) ::)
-
I followed your instructions Annie but "searching" took me back to the lady with the folder. ???
Annie, can you get anywhere on "search"?
Nanny Jan
-
This is what I did .....
I Googled Great Ormond Street Hospital - admission records database
That took me to .......

This works for me as long as I click on Cache :D
Does it work better with this link?

Ummmm..........it gets me to the page for small and special (GOSH) but trying to search (using a name I know was on the database) takes me back to the lady with the folder.

If you click on 'cached' from Google you're just seeing the page when Google last cached (saved) it. Searching won't work as the site still no longer exists :( All you will be able to see is literally that cached page, the links won't work.
I'm hoping it will reappear somewhere soon. Its been publicised in a couple of family history mags recently, I'd not heard of it before so was just going to have a look. It appears from the message that comes up at the top of the page that it has expired (i.e whoever owns it has not paid the subscription going forward).
-
Yes, I get to the cached page ... but no search facility any more :(
My own mother was there several time as a small child ...
-
Sad that it seems to have disappeared so quickly. The cache as described above , does not enable one to search.
-
I can get to the search page, but if you put in a name and click search you get the following:
The domain smallandspecial.org has expired. Please contact your domain name registration service provider for further assistance. If you need help identifying your service provider, visit http://domainhelp.tucows.com.
So it looks as though anyone interested will have to e-mail Gt.Ormond St.Hospital and ask if the Small and Special is available elsewhere.

Modified - Oops, I only read the first page of the postings and didn't realise this had already been said.

That's weird, it definitely wasn't working yesterday. It looks as if it is now part of the UCL website, not sure it was originally.

Argggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ...
I find the site; enter name for a search ... click ... back to the lady with the blue folder !
I give up !!
-
Oooooo Lydart! Have you tried to register? It's working for me! ;D
Nanny Jan
-
Oh ... no-one said you had to register !
Doh !
I'll do it later AFTER LISTENING TO HUMPH, Radio 4 ... in four minutes time !!
-
I've just had an email about this site and the problems; the new site is

are trying to resolve.
Nanny Jan

When I click on the website this is what I get:
Welcome to Small and Special
Small and Special is a collection of resources relating to the early years of The Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street, England’s first in-patient children’s hospital. Here you can trace a patient, learn about childhood diseases, or investigate a member of the medical staff.
Small and Special includes a database of patient admission records - from the Hospital’s first in-patient in 1852 to the last admission in 1914; a collection of articles on the early history of the Hospital and pen-portraits of the Hospital’s personalities; and a gallery of images.
Browse around the site to discover its treasures. Better still, register now. It costs nothing, and registered users get access to more detailed information and the ability to print and download results of searches.
Then there is a piece about one of the patients. There is also a quick search box.
