Title: COMPLETED: Where, in Britain, is this?
Post by: loo on Wednesday 07 November 07 03:52 GMT (UK)
I was searching through ancestry and found a listing for a possible rellie in "British Phone Books" for someone living at "42 High View", whose phone number was, in the 1940s, "Pinner 6530".  If I can pin this one down, it might make a difference.

I have not a clue where this person lived.
Can anyone make any sense out of it?

thanks.

A search on Streetmap UK at:

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/

finds High View, Pinner, Middlesex

Thank you so much.  I failed to check streetmap, but checked mapquest and multimap instead, to no avail!

So, now I know that this street is in Pinner, Mdx, HA5.  But I still don't know where that is.  Perhaps had better try the other sites again, looking for Pinner.

Pinner is a few miles from Harrow in Middlesex. The Registration District is Hendon.

Reg Dwight (Elton John) was born there.

There is an annual street fair that was maintained through the war years by one Lady Flower Seller

If in doubt, try Wikipedia:

Found it now, thanks.
It's right where it "ought" to be, to make sense out of my "clue"!

I will post my next question on the Middlesex board.  Thanks.

Hi loo,

Just for future reference ...

Once one finds High View, Pinner, HA5 on Streetmap, all that is needed is to zoom out (click twice on the minus sign at the bottom of the map) and you'll get a map which places it nicely in context vis-a-vis surrounding places  :)

A search for
genuki pinner
might also be of interest.

Cheers,

JAP

Thanks for the clues.  (I did adjust the streetmap as much as possible, but it was still not a broad enough area for me to know where it was!)

Sorry loo!  I should have realized this.

Yes, often Streetmap - though great for finding streets - isn't too good for the broader picture (tends to jump from far too close to far too broad).  After which I normally go over to Multimap ...

All the very best,

JAP

Try google earth ........ it's much clearer, gets much closer and you can do a hybrid.

I agree with Barbara - I've recently discovered google earth hybrid maps - they are invaluable and have a large viewing window.
