I am trying to find any info on my aunt Margaret Jane Rutter nee Douglass, all I know is she emigrated to New Zealand some time after 1925, she had a daughter Elizabeth B 1914 in Alnwick Northumberland England. I have asked all my cousins for info and this is all we can come up with. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ivy

freebmd shows she married in 1913 to George M Rutter. (middle name possibly Miller?)
http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action
shows Eliz Rutter aged 8 heading to Wellington from Southampton in 1923, along with George (aged 32), an unnamed woman, aged 30, and George, aged 2. Could this be them?
-
Thank you very much, this sounds like them, they had a son George born 1920, thank you again. Ivy
-
I checked the original version of the list and this is them has their home address in Northumberland on it. Where do I go from here in finding descendants? Ivy
-
Does it say where they were headed to other than Wellington, or give George's occupation?
I'm wondering if perhaps they moved to Australia - recordsearch on the Australian National Archives shows a Rutter Miller George, born 18 Nov 1919, supposedly Temuka NZ (but maybe that was where they lived in NZ and he mistook it, having moved from England so young), living in Perth, WA, next of kin Betty (wife?)
-
Would possibly agree with that, no signs of them in later New Zealand.

Hi Ivy
Another place to check for info is the National Archives in NZ, here you might be able to find wills and probate packets, which contain the names of those who inherited - the easiest way to find out the descendants in NZ as for most time frames names of children are not on the death certificates...
archway.archives.govt.nz
If you find any then I would encourage you to join the NZ mailing list on rootsweb and ask if someone is heading to that archive - there are 4 Auckland, Wellington Christchurch and Dunedin and the location depends on the court house where probate or administration was lodged.
There are a number of NZ cemeteries online now -
Murray's site has a lot of them linked from one place...

Wendy Howard has a great reference site for NZ genie things - see the right hand side menu

I have the NZ genealogy society marriages index cd and there are a few possible marriages for your family...
Year 1937
Folio 07304
Surname RUTTER
Given Names George Miller
Sex M
Spouse ISITT
Given Names Henrietta
also known as
Surname BENNETT
Given Names Henrietta
This could be a sister of George marrying twice - once in 1942 and again in 1950???
Year 1942
Folio 02997
Surname RUTTER
Given Names Elizabeth Miller
Sex F
Spouse SUTHERLAND
Given Names Colin Gordon
Year 1950
Folio 01993
Surname RUTTER
Given Names Elizabeth Miller
Sex F
Spouse GODFREY
Given Names Leo Jack
The folio numbers do not indicate a region. Would be worth buying the electronic printouts to see if the parents of the RUTTER's in these marriages match your family. Once you have a location then things like the Wises directories and old electoral rolls come into play.
Good luck

Hi again
Checked all info children were George Miller B:1919 and Elizabeth Miller Rutter, marriages for Elizabeth & George could be possible. Any chance of finding deaths of the parents Margaret Jane and George? Is there any way I can order records online for marriages? iVY

Patientgenie has already given you those marriages at reply #6.....
You can see how to order certs by phone, fax, snail mail here:

Hi Ivy
NZ research is a bit harder than other countries as the birth indexes do not show the names of the parents for most time frames and are only available on fiche by separate years. A bit tedious to look up.
Best to buy the marriage certs of both George and Elizabeth - hopefully this will give you a location. (Remember to order electronic printouts as they contain more info) Then come back to the chat room and see if someone can look up RUTTER births in those time frames and locations for you.
While you are waiting you can then trawl through the online cemeteries to see if you can find them or their parents. And check the national archives to see if you can find wills for any of them.
Good Luck

Just a thought Ivy
you might want to check the NZ white pages as there is an E M Godfrey in the phone book, maybe this is your Elizabeth???

Thank you again
George and Margaret were born and married in England, their children were also born there. I have downloaded the forms to send for an electronic printout of Elizabeth's marriage will let you know how it goes. Ivy

Just a quick note George Miller Rutter in Western Australia is correct D.O.B but can;t find any other records apart from WW11 army records!!!!!!!!!! So at least it seems as if the family settled in Temuka. Thanks for all your help. Ivy from a very cold UK
-
Hi Ivy
Now you know he thinks he was born at Temuka, you might join the mailing list for New Zealand and ask for birth lookups for Rutter from 1920 onwards in the Temuka area.
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/NZL/NEW-ZEALAND.html
Then once you get the daughter marriage certificate info this might give you her family home - as daughters usually married where the family lived. You could then ask for a look up of the burial info for the area, if you haven't found her yet in the various on-line indexes...

Oh and for western australia help I couldn't recommend the mailing list called DPS Chat more -
