Title: Hannah Chater b 1818 West Bromwich
Post by: Bellou on Monday 05 November 07 23:34 GMT (UK)
I am researching Hannah Chater b 1818 who married Thomas Holloway b 1818 in Dudley Stafforshire in 1840.

From the census it appears she was born in West Bromwich about 1818. . Could anyone assist in finding her baptism ? or does anyone have any links with this Chater family.

Thomas and Hannah had canal boats in Oldbury . Hannah died in 1886.

Thanks  :)

Hi

I have links to Chaters. My Great Gdad and G Great Gdad were called Edward Chater. Edward Chater (snr) married Clara James in West Bromwich in 1884 and had several children who i'm trying to trace. I don't know any more on Edwards parents etc so it's possible that your Hannahe could be related???

Hi!

Yes I am still here! I haven't really got any further with the Chaters. Perhaps Edward is a relative . What info do you have ?

None of her sons were Edward . They were Samuel , Thomas , Joseph, James and John . Are these names in your tree.

The biggest link is with canal boats . If that sound familiar

Best wishes

Hi

Thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately none of my family kept any photos, certs or remember much about their ancestors!

I do know that my Grandad John Edward Chater 1912, remembers having an Uncle Jo but i don't know if he was an uncle or could of been a great Uncle. He also said he had an Uncle Cornelius.

Grandads parents were Edward (1891)and Martha (1894). Martha was a Brooks and married Edward in Coventry 1914. Martha came from a big boating family based around Northants so there is lots of history there.

Edward's father was also called Edward but i don't have a DOB for him. He married Clara Elizabeth James in West Bromwich 1884.

Now the link I need to see if they are related to your Hannah is Edward Snr's parents! This is were i get stuck as no one knows..........arrrrgghhhh.

Hope we can help each other??  ;D

Hiya

Hope your well?

Do you have a Martha Holloway on your tree? I've been getting on a bit further with my Chaters. I have my Great Grandfathers parents as Edward & Clara Chater as I've said previously but I have now found out that Edwards Father was Joseph Chater who was from Dudley, he married a Mary Ann Jukes (not 100% on this as yet) but Joseph's parents were Thomas & Susannah. Do you have any of these names on your side?

Also I came across another family member with the surname Wenlock which is a big boating family. On the 1861 census I found this:

1861 Census RG9/2021/115/36
Edward Wenlock age 37, boatman, born Worcester
staying with his (or probably more correctly, his wife’s) niece Martha Holloway
wife Mary age 31 born Oldbury
Daughter Hannah age 5 born Newport Pagnell
Son Edward age 2 born Tipton
Daughter Sarah age 6m born Halesowen

Obviously this Hannah is a Wenlock but it was the ref to Martha Holloway that interested me as it could be the same Holloways that you mention.

Do you have any Marths's in your tree born Holloways or married into the family? What do you think?

Hi there just finding my way around. My name is Chater, my fathers name was Cornelias, and Granddads name was Edward, Grandma Clara. Boat people. My family home was West Bromwich.
I do have pics of both Grandad and Grandma which I got this weekend which is why I have found you through google, but my attachments are too heavy to post.

Hi Rosewood 10!

Welcome to the Chater family hunt! I still don't know who the parents of Hannah Chater b 1818 are . She married Thomas Holloway and there are Wenlocks in the family. Edward Wenlock b 1824 was married to Mary Holloway b1830., . Thomas Holloway's sister . Their parents were John Holloway and Sarah Owen , canal boatman from Oldbury.

All the family seem to be canal boatmen. The Holloways had a coal business on the side of the canal at Oldbury .

Martha Holloway b 1842 was the daughter of Hannah (Chater) and Thomas Holloway.

Have you managed to link everyone up yet canalbabe?

Hello there,

I guess you have been rooting around for some time. I just accessed pics of Grandad and Grandma Edward and Clara today, and really find this page by chance on google and thought I might make contacts with what are very obviously relatives. We're not really that good at keeping contact are we....drifting gypsies really

The part I can contribute is that Edward and Clara along with other children had a son named Cornelias Chater, who married Gertrude Jones, and they had 6 children, me being one of them. I never saw any of my Grandparents they died before I was born in 1947.

The only Hannah Chater I can find of around that period was born in 1845 at Napton on the Hill in Warwickshire, daughter of Henry and Hannah Chater.

I think though you have had some good responses from members of the Chater family who have all supplied you with solid family information, that is factual. It seems strange to me that there is no trail to Hannah Chater and Thomas  Holloway since around 1645ish.

I give up after a night of searching, but am pleased to have read so much about my relatives that have been given to you in various posts.

Cheers and God Bless,

Miss Chater

Wow!

Welcome Rosewood10! You have just managed to fill in a big missing piece in my Chater jigsaw!

My Grandad was John Edward (Jack) Chater, grand son of Edward & Clara. He remembered having an Uncle Cornelius but couldn't remember which side of the family he was on and no one knew. I have never known who my Great Grandparents siblings were so this is a huge breakthrough! John Edwards parents were Edward & Martha (nee Brooks).

Keep in touch & thanks for making my day!

Did Edward & Clara have any children called Lou or Nellie? Grandad seems to recall aunts by these names?

Also you are my first cousin 2 times removed!
