Title: Ann Hoggarth
Post by: daniel1111 on Monday 05 November 07 10:23 GMT (UK)
Most of my family history is from the Upper Dales area of Wensleydale and Swaledale but one branch seems to come from the Northumberland area:

John Winter bap March 3rd 1805 at Kendal married Ann Hoggarth b c 1799.
The marriage was July 30th 1827 at Orton Westmorland.

I can trace the Winter family fairly well but not Ann Hoggarth.

The only information that I have on her is from the 1851 census which gives her place of birth as Barrington Northumberland (I think this is what it says but it's bad to read)

I have the relevant census information on her up to her death at Chester le Street in 1862.

Can anyone help with her parents?

Could it be Bavington? The IGI has births of 7 Hogarth children around this time, parents John and Barbara, but no Ann unfortunately  :-\

Hi Daniel

There are too similar names in Northumberland one is as catone has stated BAVINGTON the other is Berrington

I have found what I think is the family in the 1841 Do you have that, or would you like me to post the details?

This will not help with her parents sadly.

There is a christening for Anne Hogarth 19th sept 1799 Earsdon by North Shields, Northumberland

Parents Thomas Hogarth & Hannah Holles  on the IGI C000242 Batch No

But no way to prove this is her for sure

Regards Judi

Judi:
Thanks for that.
I do have all the census information on Ancestry but thanks for the offer.
Yes, there is a birth at Earsdon which may fit but it's making the links thats  the trouble.
I shall keep on looking.

Barrington is in Northumberland, Parish of Bedlington

Daniel,

Just a wee snippet, to help, or hinder your quest !

As Sharmor says, Barrington lay within the Parish of Bedlington.

Although Bedlington(shire) lay within the boundaries of the county of Northumberland, it was owned/administered by County Durham until 1844.
----------------------------------------------------------

If John and Ann were true to the English Naming System, then clues to her parents names are to be found in the names of their own children. ( e.g. second son of a couple was to be named after maternal grandfather.. )

Hello Daniel - although I dont have anymore  information than you have I thought I would just introduce myself as a decendant of John,Henry and James Winter --- I think ---  I think I am right in taking the line through to James Lawson Winter who would have been my Gt Gt grandfather, My gt grandmother being Elizabeth Ann Winter who married John Dickinson 1909 Westoe S Shields.

I was so excited when I saw the information posted about John and Ann as I am just writting up this line now.
I will keep an eye on this space.
Please tell me if I have gone horribly wrong anywhere.

I'm sorry but I have not traced the history of the children of John Winter and Ann Hoggarth other than Elizabeth Winter bap May 31st 1825, at Orton, who married Robert Wilson of High Gill Aysgarth.

I do not have the records for the Westmorland area to go into this branch of my tree in any great depth.

Maybe at a later date?

What I can help you with is the history of Joh  Winter bap March 3rd 1805.

I can trace him back to Robert Wynter 1490-1541 of Moreland Westmorland.

One good thing has come out of this link so far :).

By having my memory jogged to re-check the census returns, I have come across a daughter for Elizabeth Winter, Barbara bap Feb 28 1847 at Orton.

I have still to find out who the father was.

Daniel
thankyou for your very rapid response - I havent delved too deeply at this moments with the lives or loves of the siblings of my direct grandparents - although I will keep an eye out for Barbara -- I have seen her on later census but cant remember who her father is. Robert springs to mind.

Were the decendents all yeomans back to Robert in 1490?
Is it possible for you to share the information you have to take back this branch of the family a little further please?

We were always lead to believe that the Winter line was Danish -- I cant evidence that -- maybe you can put that in place for me.
Are you a decendant of John or Ann ?

Hi Daniel and Owlett,

I've just stumbled across this thread while researching Ann Hoggarth and John Wilson - my 3x great-grandparents. I'm descended from their second son, John.

Are either of you still researching? Still using RootsChat?

It would be great to share discoveries with you.

Welcome to rootschat, rebelhand

Owlett hasn't been on the site since 2008 but Daniel was last here in February.  Provided they still have the same email addresses they will receive a notification of your post.  Fingers Crossed  :)
