I am looking for any data on John Hall and Mary Williamson, my g-g-grandparents.
John I know nothing about at all.
Mary was born Mary Williamson c1780 Witton-le-Wear, Co. Durham.
I know they had about 13 children (I have their names).
Their first (known) child was John born/bap 19 August 1804.
Their 6th child was my g-grandmother Margaret Hall who married John Porteous in 1816.
By March 1808 they were living in Northallerton, North Yorkshire (John may even have been from there - not known) where the 3rd child Elizabeth was born.
John and Mary are a mystery to me other than Mary's date and birth place which were possibly picked up from a census return (date?).
Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks Daisy - I did not have the marriage info.
I have found a possible birth for Mary baptised 20 March 1785, Witton Le Wear, father John Williamson and mother Ann. (From IGI)
Also IGI a possible birth for her father John ab1755 of Witton Le Wear, death 4 Oct 1788, and spouse Mrs Ann Williamson, marriage about 1779, Durham. The dates fit, it's a start so I need to check it.
Many thanks for adding to the tree.

Hi,
I wonder if there's been some confusion about Mary's birthplace? I can't find any reference to her being born Witton-Le-Wear but I have found this family in 1851,
1851 HO107/2383 f.11 p.15 & f.12 p.16 Long Newton, Durham
Pile Sheds
George MOSES Head Mar 45 Pile Maker em 8 Labs Durham Witton Le Wear
Elizabeth MOSES Wife Mar 43 Pile Makers wife Yorkshire Northallerton
Christopher " " Son U 20 Shoe Maker " " " "
MaryAnn PORTOWS? Niece 10 " " " "
next page
Mary HALL Mother-in-law W 71 Yorkshire Birkby
George BELL Brother-in-law Mar}visitors24 Steam Boat Man " " ellenbeck?
Margt " " Sister-in-law Mar} 24 Wife to the Above " " Northallerton
John PORTOWS? Nephew 2 " " Helperby
I can see the 13 children of John and Mary HALL on Pallot's Baptism Index and there is an Elizabeth b.1808 and a Margt b.1827,
Pallot's Marriage Index has,
Geo MOSES b. (of Hamsterby?)
Elizth HALL s.
Jan 1828
Northallerton
Long Newton and Middlesbrough were in the Stockton registration district and I found this marriage,
Margaret HALL Dec Q 1846 Stockton v.24 p.234
George BELL with same details.
or from the IGI,
George BELL
Father: Christopher BELL
Spouse: Margret HALL
Marriage: 26 OCT 1846 Middlesbrough, Yorkshire
Which all fits nicely except you say Margaret married John PORTEOUS (did you mean in 1861?) Could it have been her second marriage?

Hi Daisy, very many thanks for the extra data. Sorry I made a boo boo about Margaret Hall, it was Jane Hall who was my g-grandmother (married to John Porteous). The niece and nephew Mary Ann Portows and John Portows on the census were Jane's children. Jane died of cholera at age only 32 years.
(I did have a g-grandmother Margaret Hall on my mom's side of the family!)
I definitely have Mary as born Witton-Le-Wear but as I have done no research on this family for a number of years I do not know where it came from.
Would the marriage register be likely to have her birth place on? If she was from Co Durham but married in Northallerton it rather looks as if she could have been in service there.
I'll check the IGI for a birth Mary Williamson, Yorkshire.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi,
I don't think the parish register would show her place of birth, if anything I think it would show the parish she was living in at the time of the marriage.
I think can see her in 1841 born Yorkshire with son William HO107/1233/13 f.7 p.6 and in 1861 born Birkby, Yorkshire still with the MOSES RG9/3654 f.83 p.20. Let me know if you need both/either of these transcribed :)
Looking at the IGI batch nummbers page here,
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyYorkshire_(A-D).htm#B
Birkby by Northallerton only has the following on the IGI,
C105611 1813-1832 M105611 1813-1832
so it may be worth asking for a look up. I found this page about Birkby at Genuki,
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/Birkby/index.html
it looks like the parish registers are at NYRO.
Hope this helps,
Daisy

Hi Daisy
Many thanks - I'm sure you are correct and I have been following the wrong Mary - the one born in Birkby N Yorks is, I think, most likely to be correct. (I see it is very close to Northallerton)
I have received some info from Ecneps on the North Yorks page, and when I have digested all you have both sent me and reorganised, I will re post.
Very many thanks to you both for getting me on to the correct trail.

Hi Daisy
I would like to accept your offer of the two census transcription - they would be most appreciated.
Mary Hall and William HO107/1233/13 f7 p6 1841
Mary Hall with Moses family RG9/3654 f83 p20 1861
All this is bringing together a family that was scattered after the death of their mother Jane in 1849.
Many thanks
Margaret

Hi,
I think Barbara has already transcribed the 1841 census for you on the other thread here :)
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,266369.msg1513429.html#msg1513429
the only thing I can add is that William was an Ag lab.
Here is Mary in 1861,

Hi, the Moses family and the halls you are posting about are my ancestors, th portows are even buried in the next plot to them! The halls are from robin hood bay. I have lots of information on them if you want it :)

Hi, have just come across your post about the Moses and hall family. These are my ancestors, would love to pass on what I know and cross reference. Witton me wear is correct by the way and they are an interesting family that get about a bit!!

Hello Kate,
Many thanks for your post. As you can see it is some considerable time since I worked on this family. I would certainly like to know more about them.
Elizabeth Moses was Elizabeth Hall, sister to my g-grandmother Jane who died so young. I started the search trying to find out what happened to Jane's children, as the father John Porteous remarried and had a second family. It would look as if he had little to do with the children from the first family as they were "farmed out" to the Hall (Moses / Bell) family 1851 and 1861 My grandfather James Porteous went to Jane's brother Christopher in Crook.
As you will see the Portows is either a mistranscription or a corruption of the name Porteous.
Where are the family buried?
Your mail could possibly answer some of the brick walls I have been unable to break down. Mary Ann did come to light - off hand I cannot recall details - but Williamson and the baby John I have been unable to find.
If you have a lot of information perhaps you would like to send me a PM I can send my personal e mail addy, and in the meanwhile look up the data I have.
Look forward to hearing from you, many thanks

Hello again, not sure if you can send or receive PM yet, I think you have to have 3 posts, however, please give it a try. If it doesn't work we will come up with another plan.
