could someone please help me find the following person.
James Newman Coe
born circa 1857
Parents: Charles Coe and Jane Newman.
There was one James Newman Coe born in 1854 SA, but he died around 1854/55 and then the next son was named after him, this is the one I am trying to find.
Some people have said he was born in Vic, but I cannot find him there.
Any help appreciated ;)

Margaret,
This is the only birth of a James Newman Coe in the Index......
James Newman COE born 3 Feb 1855 at Hindmarsh
Parents: Charles COE & Jane NEWMAN
Ref: Ade 5/106
It was also the only birth to that couple....

And this looks like his death......
James COE aged 18 mths died 30 Jul 1856 at Coxs Creek
Ref: MtB 6/1
No relative listed.
MtB is Mount Barker in the Adelaide Hills.
I did another search for a birth using just the mother's name only.....in case of mistranscription......but nothing turned up.

Thanks Dee, :)
shall keep looking elsewhere, might be one of those annoying little mysteries ;)

Hi Meg,
According to another searcher on worldconnect, [or maybe it is your good self]!!......
The family moved to live around Williamstown in Vic.
At the Williamstown Cemetery there are interments for Jane. Charles and some other COE'S who are possibly connected.
One is ANNE JANE died1885, ther is another infant.
The locations of these children make it less certain that they are related, but the parents are together.

Hi sue,
that is the same family, thanks.
I am actually looking on behalf of someone else, but not the person in Worldconnect. (she knows of her though)
The James Newman Coe is buried at Williamstown, my contact has details on his marriage and family, hence the fact that we do know he does exist. ;D
but where he was born is the question ???

Question:
Is it possible he would have been registered 'on ship', is there a separate index for this.
They would have travelled from SA to Vic around the time of his birth.
Although there is always the chance that they just didn't register him at all ;D

I was wondering if they may have travelled overland, Margaret..... Mt Barker district would have been on the start of a journey in that direction. If they made the long slow trip overland, a birth may well have not been registered. :-\

That makes a lot of sense Dee,
knew I could count on you ;D
we have looked at some Vic shipping but most of that covers shipping from overseas.
thanks again

I agree with dee :)
From 1859 to 1866 they registered 4 children at Balmoral, and a death - so certainly looks like they would have come overland - as this is over in the Western District of Victoria. Since they were leaving the state, or already newly arrived when the second James was born, they might not have bothered to register the child. They do not register any births in Williamstown until 1870.
They probably told the registrar that they had registered him in SA. They were quick to register their next three - all girls, not yet named when registered!

Thanks Christine,
great to have a second opinion on that one. ;)
I certainly looks like that is what has happened.
Appreciate all the help on this, thanks everyone.

It hadn't been mentioned before. Margaret's friend has the marriage details - but must have just the reverse index entry then - if it has the place indexed like that, it should also have the State recorded on the actual certificate. As well, all his children's birth certificates will also record the State, so I do not know why it is such a mystery then ;D I was thinking he must have married in SA or NSW where these details are sometimes left off!
Mt Talbot is in the Balmoral area, towards Horsham.

Hi Christine and Jenn,
yes my friend (sister in law actually ;D) has the marriage details, and as you have said it states born in Vic. But on searching the birth indexes she could not find it. thus the reason we thought might be worth checking the S.A. indexes in case it was incorrectly entered.
Thanks, sorry if I have mislead you on that one.
My computer is slowly dying, will have to take it to the technically doctor very soon, Hope I don't lose any data.
Trying to save what I can like a mad fool ;D ;D

It gives you a narrow time frame for when they went from SA to Vic. Not every birth is registered, but it was worth checking just in case he only thought he was born at Mt Talbot, Vic.
Any Victorian born kids birth certs will also record his birth place.
Good luck with saving everything before the computer dies. It is good when you get warning that it is going to happen. I found when I changed computers that my backed up emails would not restore to the later version of Outlook Express, so now I save them as text files in My Documents. I was lucky that I printed out all the ones still in my inbox.
Christine :)

Thanks Christine,
so far so good with the computer, forget emails though :'(
back to the drawing board.
But as you have done, I also print up a lot of the emails that I get, thus having that persons email address in paper files. ;)
cheers

Wonderful brocky28 that this is your family, hope some of this info has been helpful to you.
My Godparents had the surname Coe, do not think they are related. Lived down on the Mornington Peninsula in Vic. Do not know much about them.
