Title: Marriage Certificate Help please
Post by: Clemo on Saturday 03 November 07 20:58 GMT (UK)
My Great Grandmother, who was born as Susan Jane Wiegold on 07.07 1853, originally married a chap called Frederick Farrow.  From BMD, the only reference I can find is a marriage between a Jane Wiegold, not Susan Jane, on the 17th Feb 1875. with the rank or profession of her father saying "Deceased", (I have the marriage cert which says Jane, not Susan Jane). This I believe to be correct as he died in 1874.
My query is that she later re-married my Great Grandfather on 02.06. 1890, with her name correct as Susan Jane (keeping Farrow as her surname), but listing her fathers rank or profession as "fishmonger", even though he had been dead before her first marriage.
I want to be sure that I have got the correct people. (Wiegold does not appear to be that common a name).
Was it common on certificates to put the profession even if he was dead, or would they definately have put deceased, in which case I have some more searching to do?
Many thanks

Hi Clemo,

I have certificates where the father is stated as deceased and 10 years later, at a siblings marriage,  is not. So, it depends on what questions were asked of the bride and/or groom I think.
With such an unusual name, I would say that you have the correct certs.

Hi Clemo,

It all depends on the registrar asking the question. Sometimes they did forget to ask the question at the time of registering the marriage.

On my grandmother's marriage certificate, she actually said "Dead", not "deceased". It was written out exactly.

On one of the marriage certificate(s) of my great- grandmother simply showed her maiden name, no mention of her married surname, yet she was put down as a widow. That is how I know I have a correct marriage entry.

This is to show that it is the registrars, not people as many people would led to believe.  ;D

Regards,

Tees

Hi,

I agree with Tees and India.  Although he was obviously quite a jack of all traders and master of none (like most of mine  ::) )

1841 - general dealer (think its him)

1861 - Ostend rabbit dealer  (I'd ask the occupations forum, presume it means Ostend, Belgium)??

 1871 - hawker

Oh, let me know if you want info of any of the census records above you haven't got.

Joan

Thanks all
Yes please Treelover - any info you have got (& where  you got it from) ? would be greatly received !!
I have Susan Jane Wiegold birth certificate (B 09.07.1853), but cannot find her or her family in the 1861 or 1871 census. (I have not looked at 1851 or 1841 yet)
Thanks again.

Clemo,

Even if the father was deceased, it would not alter his profession.  The registrar was supposed to put on the father's occupation AND whether he was deceased or not.  Unfortunately the registrar did not always ask the right question of the couple he was marrying.  He would only put down what he was told.  My great grandmother married at least twice if not three times.  On her first marriage certificate, her father is apparently alive, on her last marriage certificate (can't find the second, which is the one that matters), he is dead.  He actually died 14 years before her first marriage.  On each occasion his profession is shown as brewer.  Also for that last marriage, her name has changed from just plain Fanny - as shown on her birth certificate -to Frances.  But it's definitely her.

I'd go with India - Jane is Susan Jane. And also with Tees - it depends if the right question was asked.

Have a look at this site for more information about the pitfalls associated with certificates in England and Wales:

Thanks Treelover,
Yes - on Susan Janes birth certificate it has her mother as Judith Wiegold formerly Wright.
From Free BMD there is a Judith Wright marriage in Dec 1841, but no partner having the name remotely like Wiegold, therefore it is likely that this is her second marriage.

Me again,

Just realised step son is a fish porter, suppose then that in the couple of years before his death he could have been hawking the odd fish  ;D

I wonder if "Ostend" is meant to be "East End"?  ;D Sometimes 'son/daughter in law' means 'step-son/daughter' in older records.

And I, too,  have a magically name changing relative - born Sophia Matilda, married as Matilda and then as Sophia Matilda again.
