I'm trying to find a photo or any information on a Baker's Shop at 71 Lambeth Walk, Lambeth, London. It was owned by my 2 x Gt Grandfather Henry Loeber and he baked there from the late 1870's then his son took it over and I understand from my Great Grandmother that the 'Loeber' sign existed until after WW2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Or if you click on Google images then type in Lambeth walk there are lots of photo's some old ones of streets and shops.Good luck...

The street was demolished in the late 60's (I recall) in a hideous modern style. And last year one side was demolished and rebuilt yet again in a slightly less awful modern style... :-\
I know someone who had a shop there for years. I bump into him from time to time. I will ask him when I see him again (don't hold your breath - I see him 2-3 times a year!)

Thank you Hepburn, for all your searching it's really kind. I will have a look at google and check out their images.
Cheers

Meles,
Thank you - that would be great if you could ask your friend sometime.
I'm hoping he's quite elderly! The terrace where my Gt Grandfather's shop was is still standing, a preservation committee managed to get enough support to stop the demolision of that one section, which is wonderful.

Thanks Heather, for the link and the welcome. I must admit I never expected the response - it just shows what a nice bunch Genealogists are!

At no 71 is listed a John Honour Hairdresser !!it was 3 doors away from the turning of Saville Place going towards Little Canterbury Place, if thats any help, dont know if you can get a later map have a look at alan godfrey maps, theyre very good.

Thank you Victoria for your posting. My ancestors were in Lambeth Walk in 1874 but there's some confusion because they changed the numbering. I think this was due to the Railway arriving. The bakers was originally at No. 124 and I thought they had moved but apparantly according to a website I found No. 124 was changed to No.71. The bakers was actually nextdoor to The Angel Pub. I visited the Walk a couple of years back and fortunately the terrace that contained the bakers and The Angel is still standing and is the only part of the walk with a preservation order on it. Have you visited? I have some digital photos which also show The Angel now a Hostel - if you would like me to send you a copy?
-
Yes I knew about the number changes from a lambeth website, cant remember how though. Thats why I got a map, on the back of themap it has some of the roads and number and the residents, 124 next to the Angel pub was a bakers run by a Thomas Lees. my g g grandfather worked in the Angel pub around 1861 , bit before yours were there.
No I havent had the chance to visit as yet I live in the midlands. Have seen a photo of the hostel now but not found a photo of how it was before. Nice to see a preservation order on it. I would like to see any photos you have if thats possible.
Thanks

Ros Are you still looking for the photo because I have one, showing my father's grandfather at the door of the shop (yes, 71). No date but the family story is that he looked very like Edward VII and certainly didn't discourage the similarity, travelling on the continent and trading on the Prince Regent's use of anonymity. The original photo is very bleached and with damage but my bro-in-law has done a super job with Photoshop yesterday.
We also have a family bible with deaths and births recorded, and a collection of photos, mostly unnamed or dated of the family. My grandmother was Dorothy Henrietta Loeber.

Is your ancestor Henry Conrad Loeber b. 3rd May 1850 son of William Henry Loeber? If so he is connected to our Loeber family line which we discovered had a long time family tradition as bakers going right back to Adam Loeber b. abt 1771 Germany - a Sugar Baker who owned a premises on Charles Street which we think might now be called Sceptre Road and is in Hackney. William Henry was son of our 4 x grt Grandfather Conrad Loeber (also a baker) who was son of Adam Loeber. Hope this is of interest.
