I have been trying to find the 1901 census, for my step great grandfather, John Edward Hughes.
He was born 1894, in Shrewsbury.
His mother was called Hannah Hughes, (she was not married)
and he had two siblings called Thomas and Alfred.
Also born in Shropshire.
BUT Hannah Hughes was born in Wales, and her grand daughter told me last night that she could not speak English, only Welsh.
All I know about the children's father is he was Mr Cox, the Baker.......
Who was married ::)
Can anyone help me to find Hannah and the boys, I cannot find them anywhere ???
Thank you.

Hello
He was born 1894, in Shrewsbury.
Have you got his birth certificate? If so, please post full details.
I can't seem to find them at the moment but am still looking :)

Hi Lloydy
Sorry I don't have his birth certificate.
His daughter (my great aunt) was looking for it, but she is not even sure if she had it ???
Thank you

OK!!! but can I ask how you know when & where he was born? ;) :)
-
Hi Lloydy
Course you can ;)
I have no proof, only what his daughter told me.
I did find a birth for a John Edward Hughes in Shrewsbury.
And he was younger than Lilly Turner (his wife) who was born in 1892.
I may have to order the cert if Gwendoline can't find it. :-\

Lilly and John shared the same birthday, but she was born in 1892 and John was 2 years younger.
I found (what I think is him) John Edward J Hughes born Dec Q 1894 Atcham.
Looks like I may have to order a copy, but I can't do a check can I?
Father Cox the Baker :o ;D

That's the one I found! You could always do a check against his mother's name ;)
I'm still looking in the 1901, by the way................. ;D
p.s. Don't s'pose you've got his marriage certificate?
-
Hi Lloydy,
Yes I have !! ;D
But it's states his father as John Hughes, and his daughter told me he never had a father ???
His mum was Hannah Hughes, and she had three children with COX the Baker from Shrewsbury.
I believe Hannah's mother was also called Hannah, but I don't know her fathers name, of which part of Wales she was from ???
Marriage details......

Hi again Lloydy.
I just spoke to my great aunt again.
Cox the Baker was from the same place as John Hughes was living when he was married.
So I am going to try a find a man called Cox, who was a Baker living there ;D
Also she thinks John Hughes (on John's marriage cert) may have been his grandad.
So I will see if an find a John and Hannah Hughes living in Wales, with a daughter also called Hannah.
Getting confunsing :-\

So I will see if an find a John and Hannah Hughes living in Wales
I don't envy you doing that!!!.............happy hunting :D
I still can't find John E Hughes in the 1901, and I even checked the images for the whole of Longden Coleham but nothing. I couldn't see any COX families either, although there are a few in other parishes, but no bakers ???
I wonder if it might be worth you ordering the birth certificate that we mentioned earlier, using his mother's name as a checking point, to find out where he was born.
John Edward J Hughes born Dec Q 1894 Atcham.
Atcham registration district does cover a large area -

While you're waiting for it to arrive I'll keep searching the 1901 ;)

Hi Lloydy
I know Hughes in Wales ::) lots of them!!!
I did find several Hannah Hughes, with parents Hannah & John Hughes, but as we do not know which area of Wales Hannah was from/living it could be any of them.
I think you are right, to order his birth certificate, and take it from there.
I still cannot find him in 1901 either ::)
Thank you for looking.

Hello again
It's been a long time.........and unfortunately since our last search I no longer have access to the census :'( :'( I can't help you with that bit I'm sorry.
The only thing I could suggest that although John was obviously illegitimate, the fact that Jones was listed as one of his names may indicate that his father was a Jones.....not much help really :(
I do hope that another member sees this post and will be able to help with the 1901 search.
Good Luck :)
