Selina Ann BASSETT was born c1827 at Stogursey, third daughter of Samuel and Selina BASSETT. Samuel was a customs and excise officer and had married Selina WINTLE on 31 Mar 1817 at North Molton, Devon.
Has anyone come across this family in any church records anywhere. They were in Williton, Somerset, in 1841.

Hi
According to a submitted entry on the IGI - Selina was born in Devon and mothers maiden name was NUITH??
SELINA ANN BASSETT Birth: 1821 Devon, England
Father: SAMUEL BASSETT Mother: SELINA NUITH
These are also submitted entries
SELINA ANN BASSETT Spouse: GEORGE WASHINGTON WHEELER Marriage: 1852 Devon
PRISCILLA BASSETT Birth 1817 Devon Death: 1878
Father: SAMUEL BASSETT Mother: SELINA NUITH
Spouse: THOMAS AMON Marriage: 1844 Richmond, Surrey,
CAROLINE BASSETT Birth: 1819 Devon
Father: SAMUEL BASSETT Mother: SELINA NUITH
The following is an extracted record so is from the original entry
PRISCILLA WHEELER BASSETT Christening: 24 MAR 1818 North Molton Devon
Father: SAMUEL BASSETT Mother: SELINA
Any records relating to the above children will be held in Devon (see next reply).
However - what your message did not say was that the 1841 only has the following 3 children living with Samuel & Selina and they were born in Somerset:
Thomas 15
Ann 10
William 7

the 1851 shows William Bassett (Basst) aged 16 living with his sister Caroline (31)and her husband John Hadland (28 b M'sex) in Middlesex. Birthplace is shown as Bridgewater Somerset and Caroline is shown as b Taunton Somerset (not Devon as per IGI)
Marriages Mar 1848

HADLAND John Richmond S 4 379

Thanks Carole. The submitted info on the IGI is rather dubious.
Samuel Bassett being a customs officer moved around a bit. Nothing found on his birth yet, but he is thought to be from Devon. His father in law, William Wintle was also an excise officer, probably how Samuel met Selina. Selina jnr was in Williton in 1841 as well, at another house. The two elder daughters Priscilla and Caroline were in London in 1841.

Selina Bassett shows on the 1851 census in Mortlake, Surrey with daughter Anne without Samuel.
Possibly this is the death record for the Samuel Bassett that you are looking for?

Thanks JNBassett.
Samuel made his will in 1840, and it was proven in September 1846, so we were thinking his death was the one registered Jun qtr 1846 Stroud. Have not got the death cert yet so not proven.
The HADLANDs came out to Australia c1852, and Thomas and Priscilla AMON came to NZ about 1856. The daughter Selina, with her uncle William WINTLE in Berkshire in 1851, came to NZ with the AMONs.
Have since found her baptism at Stogursey.
They also had sons William, Thomas and George. William is the only one not found after 1851 and we think he may have come out to Australia with the HADLANDs. George died in 1840, Thomas in 1860.
Anne who was with Selina snr in 1851 is the only one who stayed in England.
