Hello, Is there any way of finding out who lived at an address in 1945?
The address i'm interested in is 62 Front Street, Brampton.
Thanks
Kerrie

Hi Kerrie
Have you tried Trade Directories, electoral registers, telephone directories?
If I'm correct this is quite an old address, where there were many tradesmen, and some businesses I've looked at did have telephones by then, Most people had a vote by then.
Good luck and best wishes.

Hi, thanks, no I haven't tried those. You don't happen to know where I would be able to access them do you?
Thanks again

Hi Kerrie
Sorry I was thinking you'd get them off Historical Directories, but I'd forgotten they don't go that late in many areas. I've just checked and Brampton is one of them.
I've put the link below anyway incase any reader wants to try it..
If no one else does it before I go in, I'll have a look at the records/ archives.
It might be a few days though as My bad leg and our parking problems/ roadworks don't get on very well.
Electoral registers are at the archives, (though those for Carlisle it self are in the Local Studies Library inthe library . This is in the Lanes shopping Centre.)
There are a few old telephone directories in there too, and also some trade directories with a few in the archives at Carlisle Castle.

Best wishes

Hi again Kerrie - Emms again!
Just a thought----- some of these items are alphabetic for name only. Are there particular names you're expecting to see there?
Best wishes.

Front st is nearly all shops now. If the alzeimers doesn't catch up I'll wander down there on Saturday for you.
Remind me next week if you haven't heard from me. :>}

Hi, Thanks Bob and Emms, the names i'm looking for are George and Julia Mason,,,or any Masons that might be nearby.
My Grandad was born in Lambley,Haltwhistle in 1921 and I'd always thought that his parents would have died there, until I got his marriage certificate, I'm hoping that my Grandad was still living with his parents before he enlisted....I don't think he ever went back after marrying my Nan, my Dad doesn't remember his Grandparents or my Grandad talking about them.
I would love to visit Brampton and see for myself where my Grandad came from but I'm miles away in Runcorn,Cheshire...oh well, maybe one day.
I'll be greatful for any info at all.
Thanks again

Kerrie,
I don't how to tell you this but number 62 no longer exists! Number 58 is the last in the row of teraced houses but there is space where 60 and 62 could have been - right opposite the parisah church and what lokks like the church hall but is now an antiques centre.
If I get a minute I' check some old maps to see if main st was built after 1945.

I've tried a couple of old maps and the road layout seems much the same but Geoff is so much better at these things than me, he may be able to see if there were extra houses at the western end of main st. One of the maps says the building I thought was the church hall may well have been the vicarage.
As an afterthought, would you like a photo of where your house should have been?
bob
-
Doh! I meant front st not main st. Sorry Geoff

Hi, thanks for the help, yes I would like a photo if you don't mind, if you find anything else out please let me know,
thanks again,

Cheers buddy! ;)
Comparing the map at www.old-maps.co.uk with the aerial photographs at http://www.flashearth.com/ (wonderful stuff, I can't remember if you have to install a viewer), I would think at least 30 yards of houses have disappeared over the years.

Well I've taken the photos but they are bigger than 2MB so I can't send them!! :-[.
However I have solved the mystery of where the houses went and when. According to the plaque in the photo you can't see there were road improvements in 1962 and the road was changed from joining Main St at an acute angle (at a junction with the road to Longtown which you can just see on Geoffs map to the top left) to a sharp bend so it meets Main St at 90 degrees now about where 64/66 would have stood. The original road is now a set of parking spaces as can be seen on the aerial photo with the red car parked. The plaque is on the wall of what would have been the back garden of number 60 to some old codger (but not Mason) giving the date of the "improvements". If someone lets me know how to get these photos on I will post them.

Hi, Thanks!!, I've been wondering....does the parish church across the road have a grave yard?? also how many schools would there have been in the 20s and 30s in Brampton?
Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks
Kerrie xx

No problem with the questions. It looks like there is a churchyard behind the church on the google map. Can't check tomorrow as being dragged out shopping by wife and performing filial duties to 85yo mother.
I assume there would only be 1 school in 20's and 30's as there are only 2 now - infants and juniors - which in most peoples way of thinking is only 1 school split into 2. I also hear rumours that it may combine into 1 school soon. There is also a secondary school but that is a modern construction so what was there before I have no idea.

Hi all
That all looks fascinating.
I saw your question about putting the photo up. I put my first one up last week and there was a definite battle between me and the computer going on! I managed it eventually, but I've played tonight and decided I'd do it differently!
I use elements but I imagine all these imaging programs have similar buttons.
My file size was too big too, Also, if you saw the Cockermouth entry of Gillian'safter the first attempt, the physical size of the picture went from here to Australia!
Now I've decided it's :-
Open the image in organiser
->Right click on image and select "Go to full edit"(Opens image in edit).
->File & select "Save for web" (New window opens).
->On right hand side, alter quality, and look at new file size and image quality.
->At top, alter aspect to sensible dimensions. Look at the pixel, and check the size in pixels is permitted.(I was doing a profile image, but you might just have to reduce the quality and get the file size down slightly and post as usual).
At any stage, if nothing happens, click apply or similar depending on your program.
I actually then saved it on my desk top to make it easier to find when I was posting it, and it makes it easier if you've not done it before or if your grey matter is being stretched like mine!)
That worked for a novice and it may not be technically the best, but it's something!
However if you'd like loads of technical advice, look on the Advice boards. There is almost an encyclopedia on the subject, from many wise and experienced people!
By the way, I've done this from memory, and not attempted screenshots, but I will go through it again and double check the posting - though I'm sure someone will tell me what's wrong and give many better ways of doing it!
I actually cobbled together the info on the boards with my software, then this week changed my mind to this!
Good luck!

Sorry Emms. It didn't work but I kinda cheated and got it down to 800KB to be informed that nothing bigger than 500 will be accepted. One of the anoraks at work says I'm using too good a camera so I'll try again this week with an old camera.
Weekend was terrible as we decided to combine shopping trip and filial duties by taking mother to Lakeland Plastics in Windermere for the Xmas shopping start. Went over Kirkstone which is closed from today for 5 days for resurfacing so you can imagine the rattle on that. Said blow it we'll come back via ambleside to get caught up with the bad accident on the 591 and spent an hour negotiating the back road round Thirlmere with wife having hysterics in the back every time an approaching car/van got closer than 4 inches which was about every 30 secs.
Going to lie in a darkened room to recover.
bob

Hi Bob
Sorry about the weekend and the darkened room! It will make a good story for the next edition of your family history though!
When you're recovered, going back to the photos, am I missing something here, or could you not just repeat the process on the new reduced photo and reduce it even further? I didn't have this problem as my good one was pinched and my SLR gave up in disgust when I left it for a year when I damaged my arm.
Which imaging software are you using?
Otherwise you'll have to look at the experts on the technical boards!
Good luck

My mother was born in 1924 and grew up in Brampton. In some notes she left, she says she went to an infant school at five then the senior school 'up the hill' at eleven. The Headmistress there was Miss Jane Thompson.

Kerrie,
finally got round to the graveyard- it's not very user friendly - but I suppose the main clients don't complain too much.
Most of the gravestones seem to be made from the local red sandstone so have rotted pretty badly (or been vandalised). However there was 1 mason headstone readable as follows"In memory of Jane, wife of Thomas Mason of Brampton who died May the 3rd 1795 aged 76"
I also called at the library to see if they had any old documents but she says all local history is at Carlisle.
