Dawn.

I just did a quick Googgle, and found this site:

http://www.manchester2002-uk.com/info/gov-agencies.html

On which '123 Cresent Road, Crumpsall' is listed as  'Cheetham Hill Benefits Agency Office'.

Knowing how Government Dept's (Local & Central) have a habit of Re-Using Buildings They 'Own' I think there is a good chance that this Property may have at one time been a Nursing Home? ::)

Hi Dawn

What was your grandmother's name?

This is a very sad tale indeed.

Hi Dawn

1937 Q3
Muriel C Lumsden age 27 Manchester N vol 8d pg 524

I can't see any other entry for Manchester for Lumsden that quarter so maybe the infant was too premature to be registered?

Hopefully those left now can try to heal the family rift.

Good luck

thanks sandra
i think my mum is a bit in shock at the moment we thought the baby might be to early mum said even though she was only 3 at the time she remembers her mother being taken from the house in agony on a chair and that she never returned like i said it is very sad because nobody ever spoke of anything then hopefully she will come to terms with it all slowly
thanks again

Hi Dawn

Almost sounds like an ectopic pregnancy from that description.

As you say, no one spoke about these things openly at the time but how sad for your mum.

Hi Dawn,

I also have a death cert address 123 Crescent Rd Crumpsall; it was a workhouse to start with but then became a hospital. My Gt-grandmother Elizabeth died there in 1922, cause of death "mania" which I think would translate today as mental illness.

http://www.manchester.gov.uk/downloads/PoorLawRecordsGuide.pdf

has a brief history of the Crumpsall site.

http://www.a2a.org.uk/html/127-m326.htm

is the Access to Archives link, it includes "Beech Mount Maternity Home" within Crumpsall which may be what you want. Records are at Manchester Central Library. The link says that some medical records are restricted for 100 years, but some admissions, births and deaths are open.

I have to confess, just reading the list of headings in the online link is so bleak, I've not yet tried to delve into my gt-gran's records, in any case I am some distance away.

Good luck,

Barbara
