i would like to find my gran alice maud atwell/attwell, she was born 1877/9. dont know were she was born only what it says on the 1901 census which was marylebone, she used the 24 feb as her birthday, she married archibald goodall in st johns church holborn on 6 sept 1896, and they lived at 56 red lion st holborn according to the wed cert. her father was edward douglas atwell [as he signed] commision agent and she signed the cert attwell, on the bmd site there a two entries for alice one as atwell and one as attwell, i know she DOES NOT come from tipton , dudley because that alice father died 4 yrs before my one got married and the tipton alice 1901 was a servant in edgebaston and mine was married with 2 children i have her second wed cert when she was 50yrs and her deathcert in 1959 age 80 but cannt find her birth

Have you seen the 40 year old Edward Atwell - an 'Agent', in Windsor Road, Ealing in the 1881 census ?
He is described as a visitor, unmarried, born in Middx.
RG11/1345; Folio: 19; Page: 32

Did he sign as a witness, or is his name in the space provided for Father's details ?
Quite a coincidence to have that exact fairly unusual name ?
-
he signed as a witness, and yes i have seen that one but it poses the question whos her mum and why is he on the wed cert if hes unmarried
-
i think we have had this look up request before and nothing came of it i.e Maud or ALice At/twell, (all combos)
have you considered this one:~
Female Attwell Q1 1877 Windsor 2c 448
(right area well London not Staffs. right qtr)
or there was this one:~
Female Atwell Q3 1878 6a 171 Barton Regis
(wrong atrea and qtr)

....but it poses the question whos her mum and why is he on the wed cert if hes unmarried
You canot rely on 'condition' as to marriage (or in fact not much at all really ;) ) as given on a census entry ....
Given all the facts, I'd say she's registered under another name and if her DoB can be relied on, also on the Census under another surname ....
-
newf were did you find edward d atwell 51 widower he sounds promising i know he was dead in 1929 it says so on her 2 wed cer
-
Female Attwell Q1 1877 Windsor 2c 448
I think this is her birth
maybe she didn't have a name but they had to register her within the 42 days 6 wk limit to avoid a financial penalty.
-
My view on this Edward chap is that a middle name of Douglas in conjunction with the At[t]well is virtually unique ....
But as to what his real relationship was to your lass, who knows, I've seen more 'fabricated' fathers on Marriage certs than ....... ;)
Again the Marriage Cert - is it the original, as signed by all parties, or a modern copy (which is in fact a copy of the Register entry, and hence has no original signatures ... )
He is at the 1891 census refn I gave, albeit transcribed Alwell ....
-
so, Toni, what Attwells are on the 1881 census with a link to the Windsor area ?
-
i sent for a copy of her wed cert oct. 2006 the writing is bad on it.
why is nothing simple. will order the female cert today and see what comes of it
-
so, Toni, what Attwells are on the 1881 census with a link to the Windsor area ?
i think we exhausted all other possibilitys of her birth before.
-
thanks for all your help and ideas have a couple of new ones to play with know
regards
fran

actaully i would ask the register office first if they could tell you either yes / no if the father was Edward before spending your money.
Newf said to check the 1881 census , which i hadn't done before ( as looking for a birth) having done so now i find :~
Elizabeth Attwell , scholar, age 4 so b. abt 1877 Windsor resident in the workhouse (which is where she was born.) also residents of the workhouse were Elizabeth age 24, a female servant and Alice (how old was ALice?)
RG11 1325 107 3
perhaps the Female Attwell birth was Elizabeth. :-\
-
My thoughts exactly Toni :)
Looking in the Windsor area in the 1881 census, there's an Elizabeth b1877, with her mother Elizabeth and presumably sister ALICE (6 months old) - this Alice has no Birth Index entry that I can see ... and she is younger than your facts suggest ....
RG11/1325; Folio: 107; Page: 3 - Windsor Workhouse ...
Elizabeth Attwell 24 Inmate Servant New Windsor
Elizabeth Attwell 4 dau Windsor Workhouse
Alice Attwell 6 months dau do
Might be worth seeing if this Elizabeth married, and thus what name the young Alice has in 1891 (if she survived)
Also a backtrack on Elizabeth to establish her parentyage ....
-
any chance Elizabeth Attwell was a witness at your Alice Mauds marriage?
hoping this is the right family!
also where was Edward in the 1881 census?
-
Cant see that Elizabeth dying or marrying in the Berkshire RDs before 1891, nor an Alice dying ...
Elizabeth is in the 1871 Census, Father George ... in New Windsor.
RG10/1300; Folio: 8; Page: 7

Hi
Just a quick question what doe the other 'M' stand for in her marriage entry for 1896?
-
alice maud may,
-
witnesses at her wedding were thomas gordon and julia wickham,
i have no idea who they were
-
not impressed with that Windsor-related research then ?
:P
-
sorry didnt mean to sound rude,
thanks for your help
fran
-
no, I didnt take it as rude, just wondered if not commenting meant you didnt agree ?
-
sorry about that i just dont know, infact you know as much about her now as i do ;D

Hi, just to let you know I have the birth certificates of most of the Attwells born in Old Windsor area for that time. The Female Attwell born in 1877 was born to Elizabeth Attwell (mother) no father given, born in Windsor Union Workhouse. I believe the child to be Elizabeth Attwell (who is mentioned in the 1881 census). She had a sister called Alice who was baptised 20 Dec 1881 in Old Windsor (born in the workhouse too), I haven't managed to locate her birth certificate yet.
I have been researching this family for the last 4 months or so, so if there's anything you want to know, let me know (or read my genealogy blog - see below)
I think the best bet would be this birth entry:
Name: Alice Maud M Atwell
Year of Registration: 1878
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Dudley (To 1912)
County: Staffordshire, Worcestershire
Volume: 6c
Page: 60
Cheers
Neil

Hi ike,
Wondering if you had any luck with finding your gran Alice Maud's Attwell family origins???
I am having a similar problem with our gran Catherine Mary Attwell born paddington/marylebone with no mention of father on any docs I have ... which isn't many.
And would be interested if you did eventually have success with your search for Alice's birth docs?
