Hi everyone. I am new to this list and am hoping that someone can clear up something for me. Yesterday I went on to Scotlandspeople for the first time, searching (among other things) for the marriage of my gg grandparents John DEWAR and Mary NICOL. (I had been previously been given these names from another family member). What I found, however, was that on the marriage cert Mary's surname appears to be NICOHL or something similar. From what I could find this doesn't appear to be a name that appears very often so maybe I have got it wrong. I guess it could be NICOLL but the two last letters are definitely different. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi:
:D Am also searching NICOL surname in Angus. I have an Alexander NICOL living at 50 Helen St. St. Vigeans, Fofar (Angus) in the 1881 census. He is shown as age 53 on census so birth date would be circa 1828. He married an Isobelle Shand (lst) & 2nd Ann KENNEDY. Have considerable family information on those who emigrated to U.S. & Canada including the 2nd wife Ann KEENEDY Nicol.
No idea if this Alexander was born in this area or came from outwith. Would like to find his parents. ::)

The spelling of our line is Nichol and the family has been very particular regarding the spelling Good luck with your search.

Hi Tess:
:DThe spelling of names varied so much. It was clerks & clergy who wrote things into records most times, but even families made errors. My G.G. Grandfather's gravestone was erected by his sons and they have their mother's maiden name on it as "Yonson" instead of Eunson. Had quite a time locating her on Scotland's People.
If you are sure you have the correct person, that is all that matters. Spell the name as shown in the record putting (sic) after it. Then future generations will know it was like that in the records.

Hi:
Have just discovered that Alexander Nicol was in fact "Alexander Webster Nicol". Not sure why I didn't notice the Webster after his lst forename previous on the death registration.
It pays to look over your documents from time to time - especially with a magnifying glass. ;D ;D

I have found with surnames that have many spellings, especially the further back one goes, it's better to search with wildcards, at SP. Wildcards are asterix instead a letter.
Using Nichol as an example.
Some of the possible spellings are:
Nichol, Nichols, Nicol, Nicol, Nicoll, Nicolls, etc.
My search would be
nic*o*

Hi Ron: :D
Thank you for putting that up. I have read about wildcards, but wasn't just sure how to use that. You gave the perfect example.

Hi Rob
I am researching the Dewar name in Dundee- Angus area, as far as I can tell my Dewar family was originally from Foss in Perthshire and my first John was born there in 1792 parents unknown. John married Mary Ann Christie daughter of David and Mary Christie. John and Mary lived in England for some time where several of their children may have been born. John and Mary had a son, John born abt 1831 and in the 1841 census in Dundee, he is listed as an Apprentice Tailor. Do you have any connection with this family.

Hi Launaline
thanks for the link, but as yet I've not been able to find any of my Dewar's on the IGI, they are just not that keen on being found. Thanks anyway
