Title: Gray Family Southill (Stanford/Broom etc)
Post by: Prince-Ashton on Monday 29 October 07 15:38 GMT (UK)
My wife's Grandmother was Mary Jane ALBERY (nee GRAY), born Stanford 26 Jul 1882. her perents were Joseph and Fanny (nee Wright)

We have quite a lot of information on the Gray family back to Daniel Gray born about 1790, and a good deal of the various branches from that date.

We would be pleased to share information and firm up some of our queries, as well as finding relatives currently living.

Joseph's younger sister Hannah was my gg grandmother, and although I'm bemused by your Daniel born c 1790 who I don't have in my tree,  I do  have a couple of earlier Daniels.

What are your queries - I'm happy to share what I have

David

Thanks for the contact. It seems I may have mistyped the date for Daniel Gray! He was the father of John Gray b.1765.

The attached Acrobat file should give what we know about the Gray family of Southill down to Mary Jane's generation.

Just for interest, my father was Charles PATRICK, vicar of Southill from 1952 to 1960.  Me marrying into the descendants of the Gray family was a big coincidence!

We would be grateful for any additional information you have.

Thanks for the attachment which I'll go through in the morning.

There was a thread I was involved in a couple of years ago on Daniel Gray at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,146056.0.html

More tomorrow

Regards

David

I attach a file which I hope you can open - I've never attached a file on Rootschat before! I haven't got much detail on the later Grays as my interest really ceased with Hannah born 1838. Let me know if you disagree with anything - some of the earlier Grays are a bit speculative.

On your descendancy chart I disagree with only one date - that of the John Gray born 1765 - it was his wife Ann who was buried 22 Sep 1812. John was alive and kicking in 1841 with his second wife, and he was buried on 2 Jan 1843 at Southill.

David

I also have a Gray connection.  Joseph Gray born 1775 married Mary Careless and had several children, one of whom was Eliza who married John Dunham in Haynes.  Does this ring any bells

I have a Joseph Gray born Southill 1775 in my tree, son of Daniel & Mary (see the file I attached to my last message).  I hadn't connected him with the one who married in Wilshamstead though. Does Wilshamstead parish register state that he was of the parish of Southill do you know?

Are these the Joseph and Mary who were living in Cardington in 1841?

David

We had Joseph b.3 Dec 1775 (Southill) in our tree, but got the wife mary Careless from Vixen 60 in this Forum. She will probably know if these are the ones from the Cardington census.

No David it doesn't - there is no further detail other than that he was a bachelor & she was a spinster

There is a burial of Daniel Gray, famer on 2 Nov 1811, with a note saying his will was proved at the Archdeanery Court & is held in the Beds Archives.

& Dan Gray was churchwarden in 1792 & 1795 - 1798.

regards John

Hello
I have a connection with Mary Jane Gray.
My Father's, Father , Father  was Alfred Gray Born 1869, Brother to Mary Jane. He married Margaret (nee Wiffin), they moved away from Southill and eventually settled in Norfolk.
Thanks to "Bedfordshireboy's" help I have been able to trace my ancstory back to Daniel Gray born 1682.

Regards

Terry ;)

Thanks John, I missed your reply first time round. Must have a closer look at the Wilstead branch as so far it's speculative that  there's a Southill link

And Terry, good to see you around

Regards to all

Good evening
I have been trying to find out where I had seen the removal order for Joseph Gray and wife Mary. It was on the Bedfordshire archives site.
P38 CARDINGTON PARISH RECORDSP38/13/3/11 Jos. Gray, w. Mary, chn. Loui., Eliza, Ann, Lucy, Amelia, from Wilstead... 1813

Eliza was my gg grandmother

That particular Removal Order has the settlement examination with it, which should give Joseph's life history (or very nearly!). Have you seen what it contains - it should with a bit of luck confirm that he was born in Southill.

At the moment we have no confirmation that this Joseph was the one baptised in Southill - the Wilstead marriage had him as otp, and the removal order moved him from Wilstead to Cardington, where he appeared in 1841 age 65. The ages and chronology work, but that's not proof.

Hi
Thank you for the download which added some information to my tree.  I am interested in Thomas Gray born 1857 who was married to Emma Goodship.  You have him as a widower at the time of the 1901 census.  Emma died in 1890.  She was my great aunt.  Do you have any further information on his descendants.
Regards
Pamela
