Hi Kathleen.

First of all, welcome to RootChat ... its a great forum full of very helpful people, and we have a lot of fun together, researching together and joking together.

Before we can help, we need to know a bit more info ... and please note, RootsChat is very strict about info being put up about living people ... the moderators will find it and tick you off, as well as remove it !

Can you tell us for e.g. the names of your maternal and paternal grand-parents ?  Rough dates for them ?  Places they came from ?

Then you will be surprised at the amount of info that starts to appear, and we may eventually be able to guide you towards finding for yourself, living relatives ... but you can't find the present and the future without working on the past first.  Then you'll be hooked, just as we are !

Good luck ... oh, and it would help us to guide you if we knew very roughly (country) where you live, for its no use telling you to visit Kew if you live in Australia !

(Sorry, I see you live in Greece ... lucky you !  I regularly visit Skopelos and Kephalonia ...)

Hello Kathleen

A warm welcome to Rootschat.  I'm very sorry to hear about your recent tragedy and hope that joining this community will provide you with lots of support and pleasure as you embark on your family history adventure :)

To start you off, I looked at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.  This is a pay per view site on which you can find all sorts of Scottish records - census returns back to 1841 and birth, marriage and death certificates going back to 1855.  There are also many old parish records going back a long way before that.

There is a marriage listed there of William Jaffrey Crighton to Eliza Cook in Dundee in 1915.  Does that sound like your grandparents' marriage?  If so, you can view the marriage certificate on the site for a small charge and you should find both bride and groom's parents listed, as well as witnesses' names, which will help you to take the next steps with your research.

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask on here if you have any questions.

Anna

Welcome to RootsChat Kathleen,

Crighton, Creighton and Crichton. Slightly different spellings but pronounced in much the same manner. There are families named Creighton in Ireland.

Creighton - 1796 Flax Growers List (Spinning Wheel Census).

Alexander, Kildress. Tyrone
Laurence, Enniskillen. Fermanagh
James, Donaghenry. Tyrone
Thomas, Aghaloo. Tyrone
William, Kildress. Tyrone
Robert, Down. Down
Richard, Down. Down
Edward, Clondermot. Derry
Henry, Banagher. Derry
John, Magherafelt. Derry
James, Newtown. Down
Alexander, Errigal. Derry

There appear to be no Crightons on the Flax Growers list but there were a couple listed in Griffiths Valuations of Ireland ...

John Crighton, Cavanacross, Derryvullan. Fermanagh
Michael Crighton, Aghadrestan, Tibohine. Roscommon

269 people bearing the Creighton surname signed the 1912 Ulster Covenant and ten named Crighton signed.

There's an area called Creighton's Green in the Holywood Hills a few miles from Holywood, Co. Down. I assume a family named Creighton lived in that area at one time. A family friend, now deceased, had a cottage there. The views of Belfast Lough and the Co. Antrim coast were great as the cottage was at the top of a hill close to a reservoir.

Kathleen, I now see that it's unlikely your grandfather would have married as early as 1915 if, as you say, he was born in about 1902.  Unfortunately this is the only Crighton/Cook marriage I can see (the online records go up to 1931).

William Jaffrey Crighton appears to have been born in Dundee in 1895.

Do you know whether your grandfather had a middle name, or what his exact date of birth was?

Hi Kathleen,

There appears to be either 2 William Crightons or perhaps they are the same person  ???  Both born 1900, Dundee, one baptised at St Mary's Parish Church (Church of Scotland) and one baptised at St Peter Free Church. If you were to call up the image of the entry/s from ScotlandsPeople things might be clearer.
