Title: Soldier 1st world war
Post by: Grabridge on Sunday 28 October 07 21:54 GMT (UK)
I know my Grandfather Herbert Charles Stanbridge born in 1898 in Ampthill fought in the first world war in the army.  I also know he was shot in the face whilst fighting in France.  Here my information ends.  Can someone please tell me where I can go to find out more.  Unfortunately I don't know what regiment he fought with or when he joined up.  Have I got any chance of finding out?  Will this mean a trip to the National Archives with the little informaton I have?

Hi
Go to the NA site and search for his Medal Index Card (MIC)

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/browse-refine.asp?CatID=10&searchType=browserefine&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1

Just type in Herbert Stanbridge and you get six hits, there is a Herbert C that could be him. You can purchase his card for 3.50 pounds.  This should give you at least the regiment as a starting point.

Just noticed this on the CWGC site - could he be a relative?
