William Filing head mar 34 ?? hammer smith
Originally, I think it said Drop Hammer Smith, then the Census Registrar came along, decided he was some sort of Blacksmith and wrote Blacks.

Here's one I've been debating - it has to be them, despite some "inaccuracies".
Back St, Spittlegate, Grantham (lodging)
Thomas FEELING 23 Traveller on way to Stamford Fair, Staffs Burslem
Sophia 22 Traveller on way to Stamford Fair, Derbys Ashbourne
I don't think they ever made it to Stamford.

Hi Ricky and Geoff
Wow you have done brilliant. what a lot of interesting information you have found.
Yes my relatives said that some of them came from Germany and you have found them amazing :D
So they were travelers that is very interesting news.
Also that makes it hard to find them. never mind thank you so much for all you have done. :)

Hi!
i found this thread because I've been trying to find out about John Filing (who was my great great grandfather - So George Filing was my great Uncle too, naffi girl :) - my great grandfather was Sidney Filing). I doing this for my grandpa who is curious about his surname and is a ripe old age of 93. I live in Germany so he hopes i have all the answers ;) I want to thank everyone who shared the info here. I had found a lot of this stuff via ancestry, but hadn't been able to connect the dots! Would be happy to know more if anything else comes up.
With gratitude,
Zi

Hi Just to add to this post Inner Street was mostly people who worked at Ruston and Hornsby works which was on London Road next to Inner Street.by the way Back Street was the old name of Inner Street. There is a book about the Street between the 2 World Wars giving a lot of information about the street and its occupants BUT is sadly out of print but there is a copy in the reference section of Grantham library.
Incidentally my husbands grandparents lived at 5 Langston Buildings in 1922.
