Title: 1901 Census Gaol record
Post by: joppo1968 on Sunday 28 October 07 14:38 GMT (UK)
I'm posting this from Tasmania & have been looking for a marriage or death for my Great Uncle William James Jopson but have not found any in any Australia state until I stumbled upon an entry for a William "Jobson" (Jopson is sometimes mispelt that way) on the 1901 Scotland Census (Ref: Parish: Perth. Ed: H M General Prison: Line: 10: Year: 1901.

This states that he was born in Australian abt. 1873 ("my" William James Jopson was born on 21 May 1873 in Launceston, Tasmania & last appears as an "Issue" on his Mum's death certificate in 1929 but no residence for him.

Is there anyway I can find who the William Jobson was that was in gaol, his birth date, why he was in gaol etc?

Mike.

Hi,
The National Archives of Scotland also have prison registers for Perth. Have a look at http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/crime.asp
The archives also hold material for the High Court so if the relative was in because of a serious crime it is possible that they will have records of that trial. The guide to crime and criminals should give you more info.
Hope that helps.

Hey ciorstag72!

I'll check out the link you've given me & see what it brings up as (nothing against RR) but the other link didn't tell me anything really but then again, that might be just me  ::)
