Hello Jo,
James Chappell, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, Private, promoted to Serjeant, No.2476.
He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals (the mark denotes as Serjeant Chappell). He was also awarded the 1914/15 Star as he entered the Theatre of War (France in this case) within the qualifying period (13th April 1915). He was killed in action. This link will take you to the CWGC entry:
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1543224
The numbers to the right are the actual medal roll numbers which are onle searchable at the National Archives and may, or may not provide any additional details.
The MIC for Clifford, although a different format, provides the same details, only in this case it looks like he was discharged on 16th November 1916(?). I cannot see him on the WW1 Pensions Records on Ancestry, which are taken from WO 364. There is a small chance that his service record may have survived in WO 363, which is only searchable at the National Archives.
Regards,
Phil

Thanks you so much for that. I did try to work it out but to no avail.
Best wishes

Hi Phil, did you have to download the cards for all that, or are you looking up the records onsite ?
-
Hello Newf,
I just clicked on the links Jo put up at the bottom of the posting and opened them. You should see a complete MIC download (NA cover sheet plus the set of six cards). You can save them or just leave them open to play around with them.

James could have been in 1/4th or 1/5th Battalion both landed in France April 1915.
His medal roll would tell you this 0-2-103-B3 Page 250 will give you WO329/1455. This is for the British War Medal & Victory medal Roll book.
0-2-2B page 108=1915 Star WO329/2761 medal roll book.
Clifford could have been with the 8th Service (Pals) Battalion landed in France Aug 1915.
0-2-103 B31 page 4068= WO329/1468 BWM & VM.
0-2-88 page 770 Star 1915 WO329/2763.
He also got the Silver War Badge.WO329/3135
WO=War Office.
329=Medal rolls.
Then the number.
You would need them to order the medal rolls at the National Archives. The Medal Rolls will give you the Battalion they moved overseas with.
Because Clifford got the SWB, the roll will tell you the Battalion, day he joined up, reason for discharge.

Thanks for that.
I do have some info on Clifford I also have his discharge papers. My cousin has his medals.
He was shot in the hand which then travelled through his knee. I remember the wound to his hand as it left him with 2 fingers and a thumb which had a pincer movement, he also lost part of his palm.

http://www.poppyshop.org.uk/somme-1916-poppy-lapel-pin.html
Each poppy that has been produced is made from the fuse shells and the ground of where the battle was and each poppy comes with a certificate commemorating a fallen Soilder and my certificate I received with my poppy was for James chappel.
I am not a relation but I Googled his name and service number off the certificate with my poppy and found this forum about him.

Hi
Sorry its took me a while to reply.
James was born on the 20th October 1887. He was married to Maria. He enlisted at Pontefract Barracks with his two brothers, Clifford (My dads father) and William. He was a Sargent in the Kings Own Light Infantry 1st/4th battalion.
James died at the battle of the Somme on the 5th July 1916. His body was never recovered.

If you would like the poppy and certificate commemorating James I would quite happily send it to you as he is family and it is a wonderful tribute.
Thank you for telling me about him.

Have either of you seen the war diary for James's unit for July 1916? While he isn't mentioned by name, it gives an idea of what was happening at the time he lost his life.
Just clarifying an earlier post, both James and Clifford served in the 1st/4th battalion KOYLI.
Appropriate to be remembering James on this day.
