Hello - I find myself suddenly transported back into Devon! It was very unexpected after being in South London..
Can anyone help with a lookup in Stoke Damerel in the 1851 census?
I have Charles Frederick WARREN who was 33 in the 1861 census where he was married with a wife and two children. I believe he married in 1856 so he would possibly be living with his family in 1851. Unfortunately I'm not certain who they are - I suspect his father may be a John or a Thomas but I'm not sure.
Charles was born in around 1827-8 as he was 53 in 1881, 43 in 1871 and 33 in 1861 - he seemed quite sure of his age!
Charles was living at 11 Granby Street in 1861 but this probably doesn't mean much.
The only other helpful info I have is that he is a Boot and Shoe Maker so presumably will be employed in this trade.

Now Sarah, thought I would take a further look.
Re the family I found. By 1861 I can see, brothers John and William are both married and still around the same area. Adolphus is at sea. (Aged 33) I wondered if he and Charles were twins. Now I find a probable birth for
WARREN Adolphus James born 25 Nov, baptised 08 Dec 1828 Morrice St Wesleyan Devonport. Parents John and Mary (Extracted Record: nothing listed for Charles)
Marriage Perhaps
WARREN John = EYRE or ANNEAR 9 Jan 1820 Stoke Dameral (Extracted Record)
I haven't had any luck with the family Bertie found in 1851 either. I don't see another Shoemaker. The 15 year old would have been aged 15-19. (The two 10 year olds should have been listed as their correct ages, yet for some reason they appear to have had their ages rounded down)
Now there is a Charles F WARREN b 1822 Devonport, married to Elizabeth. He is a Canteen Tenant St Nicholas Island Barracks Plymouth. (1851 and 1861) I don't see another likely in 1841.
I think you will need the 1856 marriage certificate, to get the fathers name.

I had been wondering about Mary's POB from the 1851 census after Devon in 1841 (Realised I had neglected to add Cornwall to my census entry above, so just added it) I thought it may be important with the way her name is listed for the marriage entry. Launcells Cornwall is what sprang to mind. (Originally called Lanceles) Right near the Devon Border.
I thought I would see if they are still living in 1861 and yes they are ;D

Note sounds like it is only just down the street from your Charles ;) - Though ref numbers are quite different I guess it was just the way the enumerator walked the streets. Johns entry finished with number 7, Charles entry starts with number 8 - both entries continue to Malborough Street.

I think I have a puzzle on my hands but I'm sure with a bit of thinking I must be able to get to the bottom of it.
Okay - my Charles Warren is definitely a Charles Frederick Warren and I have just ordered his marriage certificate to Mary PAUL from Cornwall which was in Jul/Aug/Sep 1856 in Stoke Damerel.
So I suspect that I'm going to have to wait until that arrives until I can plump for one or other of these families! the Adolphus and Lorenso names intrigue me - they sound Italian!
Again thank you both so much for all your effort on this - I really appreciate it. I'll most probably be back with more queries once I know which family is which!
