In 1881 census I have John Almond b.c.1840, his wife Ellen b.c.1841, daughters Sarah Ann b.c.1866 and Kate b.c.1869. All born at Rye.
Using ancestry.co.uk I cannot trace them in 1871, or John and Ellen in 1861 or 1851.
John & Ellen would have married 1857-c.1866.
In all the subsequent censuses they gave Rye as their places of birth.
Can anyone help or give advice please?
Many thanks.
frek from NBL.

I can't see a birth for Either Sarah Ann or Kate Almond and there's quite a gap with the other children. Wondering if they were Ellen's children before she married John? :-\ I don't suppose you know Ellen's maiden name?

Thank you to everyone who sent me information. The family were living in Co Durham in 1881 and I think that the earlier Sussex information will be useful.

Hi Frek and Ricky
The Amon family you list for 1871 totally dumbfounded me, as a possible surname alternative to Almond. My ancestor was born in 1849 to Caroline Almond, who married that same year; William Eldridge, and was listed as his son; Jonathan Eldridge, (age: 1) in the 1851 Census. There were older siblings - so there may have been a previous marriage which I hope to find.
Another occurence of the name, spelled "Amon" refers to the wife of another ancestor, so I shall consider both spellings in future.

Not sure if it is of any significance but there is a marriage registered at Rye in Dec qtr 1860 in which two of the four names listed are John AMON and Lucy Ellen TERRY.
Ian C
EDIT
The other two names for the marriage were Albert BARHAM and Fanny AKEHURST, who were together in 1861 with his parents in Tenterden, Kent.
So John AMON married Lucy Ellen TERRY.

Elinor/Elenor Lucy TERRY birth Dec qtr 1840 Rye - baptised at Rye 23 Dec 1840, submitted entry on IGI.
John AMON birth Dec qtr 1838 Rye - baptised at Playden 30 Dec 1838 according to IGI. Playden is in Rye RD
Ages and birthplaces fit with the census details.
Just a thought.

Caroline ALMOND who married the ELDRIDGE, was the daughter of Anthony ALMOND and Winifred PAIN/PAYNE. She had a younger brother John ALMOND, born 1834 at Beckley, Sussex. He married Naomi BEAN in 1858, but stayed in the Beckley/Rye area.
