Title: Minnie WILTSHIRE 1870ish
Post by: TIM97 on Thursday 25 October 07 19:28 BST (UK)
Hi
Has anyone come across a minnie wiltshire born according to marriage record when she married my grt grandfather manoah morgan in 1905. She is then recorded as being a widow named Sandell. Her fathers name was William Wiltshire.

but Ive been unable to find a marriage record for a Minnie Wiltshire married too any Sandell, but in the 1901 Census she is recorded as minnie Sandell  but as appears to be a live in domestic servant in cardiff, so no other relatives are recorded at the address.

Family rumour has it that her family were involved in the Butcher trade. (Minnie's father is recorded as being a butcher on her marriage certificate of 1905) but as yet i haven't been able to pinned them down.

After marrying a ? Sandell i believe she had a  son called Albert, before marrying my grt grandfather manoah morgan in 1905 then having two children vivian  manoah morgan born 1907, and my grandmother vera mary morgan.

Cheers
Tim

Hello Tim,

Had a look on FreeBMd and you've probably seen this one:

Abel Cornelius A Sandell to Amy Jane Wiltshire
Sep Qtr 1890 Bath

There is a death registered for Abel Sandell Dec Qtr 1901 Bridgend Glamorgan

I can't see anything on the census returns, but will keep looking.

1891 Wales

Found Amy and Albert Sandell in Cardiff (could the A after Cornelius stand for Albert?), but just noticed that she is born in Surrey so probably not yours  :-[ Just seemed a coincidence that the places and death dates fitted. I thought maybe Minnie might be a pet name for Amy, plus I can't find an Abel Sandell in the '91. Food for thought maybe :)

There's a 51 year old William Wiltshire, butcher's assistant, in 1901 - can someone pull the full census entry? He's born Timsbury, Somerset.

I think he might be the one who appears here in 1871:
RG 10/2506 52/9
29 Catherine Mead Street, Bedminster, Bristol
William E Wiltshire, 21, butcher, b. Paulton Somerset
Mary, wife, 22, b. Somerset ??? (starts with a K or H, double l in the middle, ends -ow, maybe -how or -trow).

It's possible the marriage is the one on freebmd - William Wiltshire, Mary Wyatt, 1870 Bristol.

I'm having trouble finding either this couple or Minnie or the 1881 census...

Hi

Thanks for the help, plenty of food for thought.

I hadn't thought that Minnie might have been derived from Amy before.

I,ll try looking for the birth certificate using Amy.

Cheers

Bingo?

1881 Bristol (St Philip and Jacob out) Gloucestershire
RG 11/2500 folio 145 page 7

45 Tayler Street
William G Wilsher [sic], head, 31, butcher, Timsbury Somerset
Mary, wife, 32, <Hallatrow?>
Arthur G., son, 10, scholar, Bristol Gloucs
Amy J., daur, 8, Bristol Gloucs
William H., son, 3, Bristol Gloucs

1881 Lycombe and Widcombe, Somerset
RG 11/2435 folio 93 page 14

8 Summerlays Cotts
George Sandall, head, 47, brewer (journeyman)
Mary do., wife, 48, laundress
Emily Beaton, daur, mar, 24, do.
Abel Sandall, son, 17, butcher
Adam do., son, 15, carpenter
Eliza do., daur, 7, scholar
Robert do., son, 4, do
George Beaton, gr son, 3, infant
All born Bath.

And as Karen spotted...

1891 Cardiff St Mary, Glamorgan
RG 12/4396 folio 134 page 26
11 King Street
Albert Sandell, head, 27, foreman <CS?>, Bath
Amy do., wife, 23, Surry

If we are right, then Amy/Minnie was actually 18 at the time of the 1891 Census. She was also a little younger when she married Abel/Albert. I can easily imagine that she fibbed about her age for obvious reasons! Her place of birth is also wrong, but I've seen worse than that.

Hi
Thanks to the family historians on site i think ive cracked it!

Just recieved the marriage certificate of amy j wiltshire and abel sandell.

Married in bath in 1890, Amys father is a william wiltshire occupation BUTCHER!

Abel Sandells father George Sandell was a brewer, which i now recall it being a rumour that Minnie was in the pub trade before she married my grt grandfather manoah who became publican of Gwealod y Garth Inn, near cardiff.

Im going too apply for the death certificate of Abel now too double check if Amy had changed her name by then to Minnie, but so father it all seems too fit.

Happy Christmas
Cheers

Hi

Just thought i post my further results.

Just received the d/certificate of Abel Sandell,  and discovered his widow is a MINNIE SANDELL.  So between her marriage to Abel and his death she changed her name to minnie.

So i think the problem is solved!

Thanks again to all who contributed to this thread

Merry Christmas :)
