Post by: owen on Thursday 25 October 07 03:52 BST (UK)

Are there any rootchatters searching for Morgan's ??
John Robert Morgan was born at Bermondsey, abt;1845,
married to an Emma with an address of 28 Rothsay St.
according to the 1881 census.
1/ Need to know who was he and his wife ?
2/ Did he join the Royal Navy and was killed in an accident at sea.
3/ who were his parents and siblings .
Any imfo; on this is solicited., also are there any family Morgan sites?

Hi Owen

For reference:
1881: RG11 -  P  560 / F  58 / Pg  62;
John Robert MORGAN 36, General Labourer, b Bermondsey
Wife: Emma 26, b Bermondsey
son Richard John  7 born Bermondsey
son George Albert 3 born Newington Surrey
Dau Ada Elizabeth  1, born Bermondsey

Noting: Newington Surrey extends from St. George's, Southwark, to Camberwell.

Could this be the family in 1891 - Wife/Mother  is named as Mary of right age, similar POB, and the head  (John??) is not at home!!  But it's the names and POB of the 2 eldest children here:

1891: St George the Martyr, Southwark, London
(it's in the wider Municipality of Bermondsey)
Ref:RG12 -  P  345 /  F 14 / Pg 23
Address: 44 Clifton Buildings - Noel Street
Wife: Mary MORGAN 36, b London St Georges
Son: George MORGAN 13, Carm. Van Boy , b St Georges Surrey
Dau: Ada MORGAN 11, b Bermondsey
Dau: Clara MORGAN 9, b Bermondsey
Son: Frederick MORGAN 6, b Bermondsey

I can't find this 1891 family in 1881 - closest match is your 1881.

Cheers

Hi again
Then in 1901 - this  looks like the 1891 family AND the 1881  ;D

1901: Edmonton, All Saints Middlesex, London
Ref: RG13 /  P  1264 /  FoF  69 / Pg  26.
Address: (Glenrose) 37 Arthur Road
Head: Emma MORGAN 46, Marr, b Bermondsey
Son: John R MORGAN 27, unm,  Warehouseman, b Bermondsey **
Son: Geroge A MORGAN 23, unm,  Carman, b Newington
Dau: Clara MORGAN 19, unm, Fancy Boa Maker, b Bermondsey
Son: Fred'k 16, unm, General Labourer, b Bermondsey
Dau: Florence M MORGAN 6, b Edmonton
Boarder: William F LIDDLE 55, wid, General Engineer, b Bermondsey

** 1901 Son John R is possibly the same Richard John from 1881.

So possibly the wife/mother name in 1891 of "Mary" is an 1891 "typo" by the enumerator.

Cheers

Hmmm....

in 1901 is this chappie:

1901:Christchurch (St Saviour Southwark) London
Ref: RG13 / P 360 /  F  60 /  Pg 5
Address: District Workhouse
Inmate: John R MORGAN 56, married, Currier L--a-th (?)  b St Georges London

And I have a deep dark suspicion that he was not John Robert MORGAN (though that is clearly stated on the 1881)  - but rather John Richard MORGAN and that his first son born abt 1874 was named for him:

And that this could be the marriage:
Sep Qtr 1873 St Saviour
John Richard MORGAN and one of the 2 possible brides is: Emma DASH.

(For elimination, the other couple on the page are Ralph JACKSON and Elizabeth LAVER  - there is a Ralph JACKSON in Lambeth 1881 with a wife named Eliza, which may or may not be them!)

Having said that, the most likely birth I can see as possible for the eldest son (off 1881 & 1901) is:
Mar Qtr 1873 St Saviour - John Richard C M MORGAN
This registration precedes that marriage ....

The only other one close is Richard John MORGAN in Mar Qtr 1874 St Olave.

In 1891: St Saviours Southwark,  London
Could be the son
Ref: RG12 /  PiP 342; /F  90 / Pg 23
Address: 96 Southwark Street
Lodger: John MORGAN 17, Grocers Porter, b Bermondsey
This address cover 1 full page and 2 half pages of Census -  12 servants, and well over 100 Lodgers -  it's a Lodging House kept by a 28 yr old Yorkshireman,

In 1891: Dulwich, Camberwell.  London
Could be John R himself:
Ref: RG12 / P  472 /F  145/ Pg 30
Address: St Saviours Union  Infirmary
Patient: John R MORGAN 46, married,    ?---man (-------?) , b Southwark
(I can't make out his occupation?)

And encourgaingly, there is an Emma DASH in 1871, of the right age to be Mrs Emma MORGAN of 1881-1901 - and at a somewhat familiar address:

1871: St George the Martyr, Southwark St Saviour, London (Kent Road area)
Ref: RG10 /  P  600 / F  45 / Pg  28;
Address: 11 Noel Street
Head: George DASH 60, Fish Curer, b Surrey
Wife: Ellen DASH 58,  b Bermondsey
Dau: Emma DASH 17, unm, Servant, b Bermondsey
Son: WIlliam DASH 29, unm, Driver, b Bermondsey
