Is there any possibility of Ontario birth records in the 1840s?
Erato

No sorry. Births start at 1869.

Ontario Birth registration starts at 1869, but prior to that you can find parish registers, do you have any idea where in Ontario?

Is there any hope for Amherst Island?

Have you checked out that link?
What names are you looking for?

Yes, I'm familiar with the site but couldn't find what I needed. Have they updated recently?
The names I am looking for are:
Mary A. Ennis abt 1842
John S. Ennis abt 1843
Hugh Ennis abt 1846
and also possibly:
Thomas Ennis abt 1838
Elizabeth Ennis abt 1839
William Ennis abt 1840
George E. Ennis abt 1847
All are the children of John and Mary (McGee) Ennis.

HI Erato,
There is a death registration for Hugh Ennis born c1841 with John Ennis as his father. It says Hugh Ennis place of birth is Ireland :-\

Do you have the family on the 1851 Ontario Census?

Thanks for checking.
I don't know about this Hugh. My Hugh Ennis was born in 1846 at Amherst Island. He was my g grandfather and he died in 1933 in Marquette County, Wisconsin. Possibly there was an earlier son named Hugh born in Ireland before they went to Canada, but I have never found any other information to suggest this.
I don't know exactly when they got to Canada. The children Thomas and Elizabeth give Ireland as their birthplace in census records; William is sometimes listed with birthplace in Ireland, sometimes Canada; Mary, John and Hugh are always listed as born in Canada; George (and all later children) always in Wisconsin, though George's supposed birth year (1847) is before the family's move to Wisconsin (1848-9).

No, the Ennises were all in Wisconsin for the 1850 census.
