Trying to do some family research from across the pond ...
Looking for information on Joseph Studley (or Stoodley) or his father Abraham. Joseph was born on Dec 22, 1836 in Somerset. His wife was Ann Vincent, daughter of Robert Vincent. They were married in 1859 & emigrated to the US in 1870. He was a hurdle maker.
Thanks!

Hi
Was he from Crewkerne? There's a Joseph Studley, aged 5 there in 41. Parents - Phillip & Letitia.
Cheers
Ian

Ian,
Thank you for your response ...
My only sources of information about Joseph are his death certificate which lists his birthplace as Somerset, England and the attached biographical sketch from the Missouri Historical Society library at UM-Columbia. It lists his birthplace as somewhere near Chard, England.

His death certificate lists his father as Abraham Studley & his birthplace as also being Somerset, England. Based on this information, I'm not sure that the Joseph you have listed is the same one even though the dates match up.
I have requested copies of the birth certificate of his son, David G Stoodley, my grandfather and his marriage certificate from the GRO. I'm hoping that these documents will provide some more details on Joseph.
Best regards,
Cecilia

Hi Cecilia,
There are quite a few Stoodley's in Chard, there is a likely father Abraham but alas no son Joseph

1861 still in Chard with Abraham and Sophia. Now here is where I come to greif. I can't find Joseph. He should be there - according to 1870 US census he had at least 4 children in England before emigrating starting with Lydia. I find the birth of Lydia STUDLEY Dec 1/4 1859 5c 503 Chard

This gets more interesting by the minute.
Now I do find in 1861 we have ;D

ROPER Lydia Dau 1 b Winsham
Wincham (Chard District) I don't find a marriage for Joseph and Ann Roper in Chard nor the birth of Lydia Roper :-\
now in 1851 I see Joseph and his family - Father Abraham

Large family including Joseph 7 in 1841 (Abraham Lab) also I note 2 Daniels one 10, one 2
There is a Vincent family in Wayford (Head Robert) who have a daughter Ann aged 3 in 1841
Now finally 1871 we have a Daniel STUDLEY and family in Winsham. 1861 he is in Surrey Daniel ROPER - same wife Harriet, same son Abraham ???

Now David aged 2 I initially gave as Daniel - they do look very similar. The more I look the more I think it is a v. The enumerator had a lovely hand, but a lot of the curve attached to letters is faint. Daniel 1 you can see his curve on the top joining the two strokes of the n (faintly) Daniel/David 2 the curve of the stroke is not there. There is however a faint curve joining the bottom of the two strokes. The name's apart from that look identical

so Joseph and Daniel married sisters both married as STOODEY and are both back to ROPER in 1861 ???

Cecilia,
I note on the Winsham Site (Click Winsham Archives - Researching Your Family - Parish Records)
http://www.winshamwebmuseum.co.uk/
the baptisms are there, Daniel's children baptised Roper also. Using search I see mention of "Stoodley alias Roper" "Roper alias Stoodley"
Joseph and Daniel's marriages are not listed (They probably wed in the Vincent's home parish of Wayford) Their Sisters did marry as Stoodley also ;)
Deaths ROPER Abraham alias HOODLEY (sic) 67 Years May 1860 ;)
Kris ;D

Seeing what else I can spot Cecilia, and I do see there certainly are Studley's and Roper's in Broadwinsor. I note a marriage between the families in 1800 Robert ROPER = Grace STUDLEY 11 Jun 1800

The only Abraham on IGI is 1805 and guesswork on one in 1792 parents Mr and Mrs

Kris,
Thank you so much for your help sorting this out.
It's very confusing to me.
I came across this link that may help to explain some of the mystery based on what you're finding ...
http://www.faulkner-history.fsnet.co.uk/Stoodley_frame.htm
There is an Abraham, bastard son of Grace Stoodley & Robert Roper.
I couldn't determine if this Abraham was my great grandfather Abraham , but based on what you're find it looks like he could be.
What do you think?
Cecilia
-
Oohh Celilia,
Now that sounds a good possibility to me. I did have my eye on Grace when I found that marriage, wondering with Joseph b c 1795 he was theirs or at least hers and took Robert's name when his mother married, later reverting to Studley.
It would seem there is little doubt this is your great grandfather...............Kris :D
Sounds interesting - Off to have a read ;)

Dear Stoodley Searchers
Anyone know of Charles Stoodley who married my Great Aunt Bessie Adaline Morgan?
The had five sons and three daughters - Bessie was from Shaftesbury and then end up at Finchley Road, Wilton Road, Salisbury, Wilts both are buried at a cemetary in Salisbury.
Bessie died May 1944
With four sons (the little one died ages 2) there must be someone out there who know of them - Bessie also had a daughter first before marriage
Thanks

Hi my name is Ian Roper I was trying to research some of my family tree and came across this thread, very interesting. I am descended from Ropers in Plymouth, Devon but funnily enough I was a hurdle maker. I don't know if any of my family originated in Dorset I shall ask my uncle who has done a lot of research into the family.
I'll let you know what I find out.
