Hello
I wonder can anyone help me by offering some advice on whether or not I have sufficient information to find my relative.
I am trying to find information on a relative named Devereux (sorry no Christian name) from Liverpool who was a mariner during WW11 and was lost at sea during that time. The only other information I have is his parents, Michael Devereux & Margaret Hayes.
I may actually have a photograph of this sailor, taken in Portsmouth, in sailor's uniform - possibly before he sailed - would this have been a normal time to have a photo taken?
Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

This is the only likely candidate I can see:

Dear Neil
Thank you for your quick reply and for taking the time to consider my query. That's a great site you have guided me to!
However, I don't think that either Peter or Passiful Arthur Devereux are my relatives. I say this because I found births in Free BMD which really look like they are for these 2 sailors...
Peter Devereux, Dec 1914, born Preston
Passiful Arthur, Mar 1903, born Woodbridge (which I believe is in Suffolk).
The places of birth for these two are wrong. My relative would really have been born in Liverpool.
Actually my Devereux sailor would have been born in Ireland to Michael Devereux & Margaret Hayes between 1876 and 1900 (but living in Liverpool) or to Stephen Devereux and Mary Ellen between around 1920 in Liverpool. On reflection and given his apparent age in the photo, he was probably born around 1920 in Liverpool.
Can you make any further suggestions on how I might research this??
Thanks for your help.

Hi Sordibub!
It would be handy to see the photo, was he Royal Navy or a Merchant Seaman?
If Merchant and died at sea his death should be recorded in the records of the Registrar General of Shipping and Seaman.
If RN then he should be on the CWGC website Neil gave you :-\ and his death would be recorded in The Overseas index of the General Registry Office.
I'm attaching a link to TNA research guide which maybe of interest to you http://www.rootschat.com/links/0248/

Hi Wendi
I've had a look at the National Archive finding aids you sent and thank you. I appreciate that the avenues I need to explore are different depending on whether or not my Mr Devereux was in the Navy or not. The task is just made a bit more difficult for me as I am researching from Ireland and you need to be in the UK to carry out this kind of research. I found the Death At Sea Register on line but unfortunately it doesn't go as far as 1900, yet alone WW11.
I attach two photographs, either one could be my Mr Devereux. The photos come from a family album in Liverpool, together with the story of our Devereux relative who died in WW11. The story is missing detail but I have managed to track some information. I have, for example, an address in Liverpool where I believe Mr Devereux would have lived (with his parents). The address is 40 Prior Street, Liverpool 20.
Looking at the two enclosed photos, you can see one chap is a Royal Navy Reserve. The reverse of that photo reads "Gales 6 1/2d Studios 179 Commercial Rd., Portsmouth". The other photo (where I can just about make out an anchor on the hat) reads on the reverse "Regent Studio, 45 Lime St., Liverpool". Don't know what type of uniform he has.
Would appreciate your help in identification of the uniforms.
Many thanks.

The first photo is Royal Navy as well.
The badge on his right arm is that of a Telegraphist (his specialist branch)

Thank you, Neil.
At least I know something about him now (if that photo is the one of the Devereux lost at sea).
I guess I will just have to save for a research trip to UK at some stage.
Many thanks for your help.

Hello,
Stephen Devereux was my grandmother, Dora Devereux's brother. They were born in The Faythe, Wexford town. I have some information on there father and mother, Michael and Margaret Deverux. If you look at the 1901 census you will see the Deverux family listed in the Faythe and the 1911 census lists Dora and I think Stephen living in King st. Please reply if you need some more information. My mother who is now deceased would have been Stephen Deverux's niece.
Regards
Nolanpj
