i have a relative who was a ship plater in byker newcastle i know he was there 1899 and 1901 where can i find old records?was there a big ship building industry? can anyone point me in the right direction for more info.

You could try Tyne and Wear Archives, they are in the Discovery Museum in Newcastle.
Swan Hunter was the biggest employer on the north side of the Tyne, and if he lived in Walker he would probably have been employed by them.
Both my grandfathers (one a boilermaker and the other as hand rivetter were both employed by Swans.
