Title: Do you have photos of ancestors on your wall?
Post by: Subaru on Monday 22 October 07 23:34 BST (UK)
I have a Rogue's gallery on my wall, with lots of nice black and white photos of my rellies.
I often glance at them while I'm on the computer, trying to find somebody from their branch.  I was never interested in them until I started researching them.

I just wish I had more, unfortunately with most of my family being miners, ag labs etc, I don't think they had the money for photos.

Does anybody else have a similar collection on the wall?

Rosemary  :)

Certainly do, Rosemary, including my Aunt shown on the left.

Like you, I don't have many photographs and as no-one thought to write names on the back it took me quite a while to identify some of them

Hi,

Yep me too.  I now have two of those frames that hold 6/7 photos in them.  One for my late mum's rellies and one for my late father's.  I have them on my computer/craft room wall and they look over my shoulder when I'm researching trees.  I'm sure sometimes a quiet cheer goes up when I find someone I've been looking for.

Draft as it may sound, I do actually talk to them (but don't tell anyone)  ;D

I have this vain hope that by doing the family tree someone in years to come will have me proudly displayed on their wall, one can dream  ::)

Thanks to the amazing skill and generosity of the RootsChat restoration experts, I now have on my sideboard several beautiful framed coloured prints of old family photos from around a century ago. Although I have a fondness for old sepia prints, the colouring when done well really brings the ancestors to life and makes them feel more like family . . .  :)

Once I've re-decorated, I'll put some hooks up and hang them properly . . . .  :-[

Mike.

I have had framed portraits of gt grandmother and gt grandfather (my current avatar)  John is resplendant with full beard even as a young man.  I too talk to them (and sometimes swear at them!)

Hi All.
So glad that other people on here talk to their family photos as well. I very often ask them for help in finding those elusive brothers and sisters or children.
I have about 32 photo frames on my wall recording the family.
My personal favorite is my gg aunt Nell's wedding on which there are 6 out of 12 brothers and sisters. Also my Nan as a baby on her granddads knee.
Also have 2 large photos of my gg grand parents taken on there golden wedding anniversary.

I'm very lucky and have lots of photos of my ancestors, and have them displayed on the wall going up the stairs.

When friends and family visit, I often have to explain to them who each person is.

I'm fortunate too in having many photographs of my ancestors. My computer room/family history room has lots of photographs framed and on display, and I have a family "gallery" on top of my piano.

But my prized possession is a free standing family tree, which has tiny frames to hang from its branches. On that I have my parents, grandparents, great grandparents, and great great grandparents' faces in the tiny frames.  :D

The saddest thing I have is an album of old photos of my German ancestors.......none of which are named!  :'(

I linked up with an elderly third cousin from the USA over the internet. She had a month's holiday in New Zealand and Australia, and spent a couple of days in Adelaide. I arranged to meet her and take her to a family get together, so she could meet other family members. We had the most wonderful day!

A few weeks after she returned home, I had the delivery of this huge parcel.....my wonderful family tree with a special note of thanks for the great day she had had with everyone here.

So all I know is that it came from the USA........

I've attached a photo of it with the first piccies I put on it......

Dee that is lovely. I bet with some Internet searching it could be found.

I too have pictures on my computer room wall and all over my living room. My kids call it the dead people gallery, but I love it. I also talk to them and sometimes yell at them. I just came into possession of pictures of my ggg grandparents from Coventry. I met up with a distant relative who had photos that had then been painted on and I took wonderful pictures of the originals. I am just looking for the perfect frames for them now.

I have four pics on the wall.

Some years back my two grand daughters aged 5 and 6 yrs were spending the day with us. They spotted these photos on the wall. They turned to me and started asking a lot of questions. Like

..."who are those people"
..."why are they wearing old clothes"
..."why aren't they smiling"
...'why are they so dark"
..."why is the old lady standing and the old man is sitting down"
..."where are they now"
..."did you go to their place"

I did my best to explain but they did have me in a tight spot. Not sure if I did convince them. I said to them "when you grow a bit older you'll get to know them better "

Not sure if that message did register in their little brain. Let's hope it did.

Dee that's beautiful ;D

I just wish I had photos of every branch to put on one.  My mam hasn't even got a photo of her dad (my grandfather).  He died when she was 17, her mum died when she was 3.  Any photos would have gone to her brother, as she was in the WRENs by then.  He says he hasn't got any photos of him - the one that he does remember having has gone missing.

I'm pleased it isn't only me who is surrounded by dead rellies though.

I also have a large scratchboard picture that I did in the eighties of a lone miner standing in front of Haig Pit, on the day it closed down.  The photo was in our local paper, a lovely silhouette that I took a liking to.  It inspired me to do the scratchboard, and also a smaller one for my dad for xmas (his dad, grandfather etc worked there).  This was all before I had any interest in family history.  The picture had pride of place in among the photos now.

Years ago, I had a picture of my dad as a baby and his mom as a young woman hanging on the wall, but none of my grandfather. I kept asking but he never got me a copy. Finally, one weekend when he was coming to visit, I hung a frame on my wall with a sign in it: "My Grandfather Leo." The next week I had a picture.  ;D ;D

I just wish I had some pictures of my mum's side of the family, other then one photo of my grandfather as a boy, and a contemporary one of my grandmother, I don't have any. I only ever knew my grandfather aswell, it would have been really nice to see what my grandmother looked like in her hay-day.

As for my father's side, I have a few photos of my grandmother, but have no idea what my grandfather looked like, he died when my father was 3mths old and the only pictures he had of him were stolen when his house was broken into long before I was born.

I have photos of my paternal grandmother's side of the family though that I keep with me which I am very grateful for!

Hi again,

Never give up hope of ever seeing a photograph.  I'm 52 never knew my G grandmothers name, let alone what she looked like. Started doing my tree last year, made contact with a 2nd cousin I vaguely remembered and hey presto, I now have a lovely photo of her proudly on my wall.

Same with me. I made contact with a 3rd cousin of my dad's, who of course none of us knew, just found her in doing research. She sent my pix of my gg grandparents and even my great-grandmother, and I just visited her a few weeks ago and got pictures of my ggg grandparents. Interestingly, my ggggrandfather looks exactly like my neighbor's son. Very eerie.

I have a picture of my grandma, aged about 6, and great grandad Wakefield , with some other people ,taken on one of those sunday prosession floats.
I had  never known anything about this side of my family ,until 4 yrs ago, a lady sent me the picture which she had found on a  Stafford site, one of my brother's is the double of great grandad Peter Wakefield, some day's the picture makes me smile, other day's it tugs at my heart, knowing that had thing's been different we would have been apart of each other's live's.
 it's genealogy emotional  :)

Crikey after reading this thread, it makes me appreciate even more all the photos i have.  Before i left Christchurch (am now living and boarding in Auckland), my lounge was full of my photos.  My brother called it my mausoleum LOL!  :-)  They are nearly all packed away until i move somewhere with more space eventually.  I feel guilty about shutting the rellies away after being out for so many years, it's like they are being reburied!  A lot of them are on my website.  I've had a tremendous lot of luck over my years in genealogy re photos.

Cheers

Glad to see that I'm not the only one with lots of dead people on their walls!!
I bought some of those multi-picture frames and put in a selection which now adorn the walls in the dining room. And some special ones are in separate frames, including the one shown here of great great grandfather and second wife. It's a Christmas card. And one of my grandfather taken during WW1 with some friends.
It lovely to look at the pictures and see who it is that you are spending so much of your time trying to find out about!!

I do have photos of the rellies and I speak to them.
My gran who is 92 once told me that it was not a problem taking photographs way back then with the Brownie box camera the problem was saving up the money to get the photos developed at the chemist.
This would explain why there are not a lot of photos around.
I know i have heaps of boxes of photos around, changed days.
I once took out the disc in my digital camera and placed i it in my grans hand and said 'gran that disc holds 200 photos' she was amazed!
regards Billy.

I recently acquired photos of one set of greatgreatgrandparents - people whom I never expected to identify, let alone see!  One of these photos is from about 1890, which is the oldest I have.
The only one I have on the wall so far though has been there for years, and is a photo of a family home which was burned in the 1930s.  I'm actually not sure if I'm going to put up the people photos on the wall.  I'm still collecting them anyway!

How sad am I - I not only have my family photos arranged on the shelves in the lounge, but I've tried to match the frames to the era of the photo's (ie. Art Deco-style for my Mum, Edwardian for the Grandparents, Victorian for the G-grandparents etc.)

Sad, sad, sad........... ::)

Hi Lydart,

Sorry, couldn't resist.    At least they have famous relatives and ancestors (not one interesting thing ever seemed to happen to any of mine).

Winnie the Pooh, Paddington, and of course, you can trace them back to 1902 and the Steiff bear.  ;D
