Title: 1901 CENSUS
Post by: Lindyloowho on Monday 22 October 07 15:27 BST (UK)
Hi:

I would like to find Ralph MELDRUM b 1879 in Sunderland in the 1891 and 1901 census.  By 1901 he should have wife Phoebe b 1881, Sunderland.

Ralph is not with his parents in 1891 - is he too young to be at sea?

Thank you, Linda

Thank you so much both of you!

So there is maybe 17 patients only there, and he was one of them?  Interesting - I suppose there is no way I can find out what he was in there for do you know?

you could try at the relevant records office - or try 'googling' Sunderland Boro' Hospital 1890s .....

Thanks Stan.  That makes sense as to why there were so few people in there. He obviously made a full recovery as he went on to live until 1954!

Any idea on what trade an electrical bobbin winder would have been in?

Family rumour  :-\ has him owning stores and a coal business in later life, but on his daughters baptism in 1914 he is shown as a hawker??  Not the most lucrative job I wouldn't think, and I find it hard to believe he would have come up enough in the world to own a business!

Thanks, Linda

Hi Linda,
A Bobbin Winder, or Spool Winder wound insulated wire on bobbins of wood or other materials, in several layers for us in electrical apparatus. The work was done on a lathe or spindle.

Thanks Stan.

Sorry to hear of your brothers premature death - we don't realise how lucky we are today, do we?

I know my sister had scarlet fever in the thirties too - she was born in 1933, but she survived.
