Title: George Peppard - the Actor
Post by: RoryT on Saturday 20 October 07 17:21 BST (UK)
Hi all,

My family "history" has always had the story that George Peppard is related to my mothers side of the family (Peppards).  Does anyone have a family tree for George Peppard.  I have tried all of his websites and although he was of Irish descent I have ever come across his family tree.  It would be great to prove or disprove this family story once and for all.

Hi Rory,

Is there a particular reason for posting this query on the Wicklow board ??? (*)

The name may have changed when the family left Ireland. The only name I can see on the 1796 Flax Growers List which contains "eppard" is Sheppard.  There were only the two in Ireland on that List which was also known as the Spinning Wheel Census ...

Thomas, Tedavnet. Monaghan
Robert,  Annaclone. Down

I have also tried "Pepp" and all that's listed is Pepper. The Flax Growers List has only three people with this surname. It might be a better to research Pepper as I imagine someone not too good at the spelling might have substituted "er" with "ard."

John, Drumgoon. Cavan
Mary, Clontibret. Monaghan
William, Loughgilly. Armagh

If my assumption is correct then George's Irish ancestors may have been of Scots descent.

I've linked this thread to your   Peppard/Pepper Poss Baltinglass  (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,199967.0.html) thread on the Carlow board.

I remember reading that George Peppard had traced his ancstry back to Drogheda, Co Louth.  Peppard was a prominent name in Drogheda in the middle ages and Peppards are listed as Mayors of the town.

Click here  (http://genforum.genealogy.com/peppard/messages/37.html) to see the John/Matthew Peppard Meath 1820-40 thread on Genforum ... that's the neighbouring county to Louth. The House of Names website mentions that the surname Peppard was first found in Drogheda. The Peppards were descended from Gilbert de Angulo who was a Norman commander of Strongbow, the Earl of Pembroke.

Click  (http://www.magoo.com/hugh/donaghmoyne.html) for the webpage of McGoughs, McGeoughs, and McGeoghs in the civil parish of Donaghmoyne in Co. Monaghan which contains a number of references to the Peppards.

1207 Ardee Castle, Co. Louth, which is the town's Courthouse today, was built by Roger de Peppard.

Hi, I remember reading somewhere on the Internet that his grandfather was from Louth and his mother from Wicklow. (My great-Grandmother was Catherine Peppard from Lusk, Co. Dublin). My mother presumed we were related to George too!

Hi foleyoni,

Welcome to RootsChat.

You arrived at the right moment. There are three Peppards in Co. Louth listed on the  1664 Hearth Money Roll for Drogheda  (http://www.failteromhat.com/louthhearth/drogheda.htm) ... Thomas, Ignatius and George, Aldern. I think Aldern means Alderman.

Whigmaleeries On Line Store shows Peppard as being from Co. Meath.

Have a look at the article by L. P. Murray in The County Louth Archaeological and Historical Journal volume VII number 4 (1932).

"The calendar of Ormond deeds: new light on the Peppard grant, 546-550".

I just got on this site for pretty much the same reason. I have the exact same story, except on my father's side. I am not too sure how to navigate this site yet but I wanted to see what you had found--I live in Texas--what a coincidence to see your post here...   I would enjoy finding out what you have found. Thanks!

My wife is a Peppard and a history of the Peppards in Nova Scotia was done, and George is related. A complete history was done by Albert Peppard " The Peppard People" ISBN 0-9697680-0-1

It chronicles Lawrence Peppard 1737-1819.

I've just seen this thread for the first time.  I have come across Peppards/Peppers in researching my O'Brien relatives.  One of the family graves in Goldenbridge Cemetery in Dublin contains the remains of Mary Pepper of Harold's Cross who died 23 January 1839 aged 21 and Frances Peppard, also of Harold's Cross,  who died 6 April 1851 aged 30.  I'm wondering if anyone researching Peppards/Peppers has come across an O'Brien link, especially one with Harold's Cross connections.

Kalishoek, any O'Brien linked with the Dublin Peppards you mentioned?

I believe George descended from Lawrence Peppard, son of Thomas Peppard and Susan Reynolds (Louth, Droheda, Ireland). Lawrence settled in Londonderry, Nova Scotia in 1767.

The Peppards were contemporaries of the De Angulo but not related from my research. Both families built castles and were” aristocratic mercenaries “, as the Historian Curtis called them.
Peppards were English , De Angulo were Welsh Norman’s . They were from Angle in Pembrokeshire, and founded MacCostelloe, Nangle, Nagle, Jordan, MacWaltrin( Waldron), macPhilbin, MacPhillips septs, to name a few!

My own family are the de Angulo/Nagle clan , my research has evidence that Peppard was a de Angulo also, and like Costello and Jordan, used their first names to found clans & septs of their own. As per the descriptions of the de Angulo originating from Angle in Pembrokeshire, this is true also, however the town was named after the family and not vice versa, as they originally come for a small town near Evreux in Normandy called , nowadays St Germain des Angles. The de Angulo were closely associated with and related to the de Lacy family, and established at least two Templar preceptories at Kilbixie and at Monanimy

Following up on last note, Peppards were from Chester in England and Peter Peppard was close with King John, and was a Justiciar Of Ireland circa 1200.
he had been in Johns entorage when John was Prince of Ireland 1285 visit.
His sister Joan de Peppard . in legal docs sometimes Pipard,  married William De Angulo, who was Breifly Third Baron Navan. William built Ardee Castle, as that was what the De Angulo did for the De Lacy Clan, mercenaries and Military Engineers.  Wliiam, also First Lord of Atherdee(Ardee) and Joan had Gilbert, Roger and Peter and William  as sons. Ormond Deeds has a ton of Peppard info, available online, eg Deed 82)  William Peppard land grant from Stephen de Hereford(famous Knight)  More to come later
