Does anyone have access to: Cullybackey, The Story of an Ulster Village by William Shaw, published 1913? It's on Google books which tantalisingly reveals that it has some information about my g g grandfather, but I can't view the book...

There are
reference copies available at various libraries (http://opac.ni-libraries.net/cgi-bin/vps2.6_viewpoint.sh?session_no=679200&sess_id=oNizgNJ0gci9w1UdtSreauywaZlPrihas5PxLplyXFo2MTMS61oUckPcxq8NpWMK&typesect=&time=435418133&enqtype=SECOND&enqpara1=RESULT&rcn=T3787070&media_code=2&sec_code=1&page=0&no_of_results=9&type=PHRASE&sec_stng=&media_stng=&authorpage=&rec_no_string=&search_string=Cullybackey,%20The%20Story%20of%20an%20Ulster%20Village&title_string=&from=0&fromrecord=1&totalrecords=10&id=&group=&code=&modfrom=). If you email one, for instance, local Studies section at Ballymena Library, and give some details, they may be willing to check content for you.

It'a all very well mentioning NI libraries guys but I think we may have a slight problem ... are you located
in Northern Ireland, Peter? If you aren't and if the book has an index a librarian may be able to do a look
up if you post an e-mail to them explaining what you require.

That is why I suggested that in my post.

Thanks folks, unfortunately I now live in England, so getting to N.I. libraries is difficult. Sorry to be so dim, but can I get the contents of the book without physically visiting?
-
In my earlier post I have given you a link to the email address for the local studies section of Ballymena library and suggested if you contact them with details of your enquiry, they may be willing to check the book for you and copy any relevant section.

Have done :)
Thanks!

Do let us know how you get on.

Did you ever get the info you wanted? I have a shortened version of this in my house. I am also from Cullybackey and could look up the library copy for you if this would be of any use to you?

Hi Bessy,
I did eventually get to read a copy at my local library, but there wasn't quite as much information as I'd hoped. My mum was born in Cullybackey, and apart from me, my family all still live in N. Ireland.
The family I'm researching is the Given family. Thomas Given, the Ulster Scots poet was my g g grandfather (he lived in Dunnygarron). I know that his father was James Given, but I cannot get any further back. There is a link to Ayrshire and the story of how Markstown got its name (via Givens and McKees), all of which fascinates me. If any of this is familiar to you I'd be glad to know :)
Thanks for getting in touch, Peter

It's not familiar to me personally, but I have heard of Thomas Given.
A historical society was actually set up in the village last month. While I don't have any info, some of the other members might. Why not check out our facebook page and keep in touch with what the group is up to. It's possible Thomas Given may be something we will look at/research at some point.

Have done, Bessy, Thomas and his brothers were also responsible for the building of the Masonic Hall in the town, so there's plenty of history there :)

Not being a Facebook user is there a website or anything else?
