Title: Tilt`s of Sunderland
Post by: el_torro on Friday 19 October 07 08:36 BST (UK)
Hi, all,

I would be most grateful for any information re the following marriage`s in Sunderland, County Durham:

Dennis G Tilt to Mavis Povah in 1944

William R Tilt to Elsie Stephenson in 1945

I am unable to establish whether any of these individuals were born in Sunderland, or if they had any children as Sunderland`s registrars office (http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/pages/registrars/) Births and Deaths are limited to the years from 1985 to 2005.

I have knowledge of a Joseph Tilt, born 1946 and died in Hull, 1985 and Gordon Tilt (deceased), younger(?) brother of Joseph, who I believe were born in Sunderland; could these be Dennis or William R`s offspring and were Dennis and William R originally from the Birmingham area and possibly returned there after the marriage?

This could be the birth entry for Joseph TILT that died in 1985

Mar Q 1946 Sunderland 10a 1047 mother's maiden name TYSON.

Hi, Pinetree, and thank you very much for your reply.

The information you quote is correct and I have now established the parents of Joseph and Gordon, however, tracking Mavis Povah is still proving to be very difficult as I can`t find any mention of her after her marriage to Dennis Tilt in 1944, at all.

Dennis G Tilt was from Birmingham and I believe Mavis may not have been native to Sunderland and that not long after the marriage may have left there to return to her hometown, wherever that may have been.

The search goes on.

Was Denis G TILT born in Wolverhampton in 1921?  If so I think I can see a death entry for him there in 1989.

Hi, Pinetree, and thank you yet again for your reply.

My father, born in 1924, was the oldest of five brothers, so no, it can`t be the right one, but thank you for taking the trouble to look into it.

A lot of the family appear to have went seperate ways and lead seperate lives, and Dennis was last seen in Aston, Birmingham by a family member in the 1960`s, without Mavis, and again in the mid 1980`s but then disappeared from sight again.

No doubt someone, sometime, will come across these messages and I will finally discover what happened to Dennis and Mavis, but until then ... the search goes on :-)

Hi Jim
You would think I had nothing better to do! I'm only jealous because my ancestors were Brown.
Doing the maths - as Dennis was 22 at the time of marriage - Pinetree's entry must be right.
Sorry if you already know this
