You can send for the marriage cert from the GRO:

There is another border crossing document from Sept/Oct. 1922 with Kate Elizabeth McCairns and her son James.  They sailed from Liverpool on 30 Sep on the SS Canopic.  Kate was 33 years old, born Grimsby, England, headed for Niagara Falls.  Her father was Wm. F. Wainwright.  James was 2 years old, US Citizen born in Niagara Falls, father is Thos McCairns, 241 2nd St., Niagara Falls, NY

There is a WWI Draft Registration card for a Thomas McCairns born 1 Apr 1887 in Lincolnshire, England.  He was living at 202 Niagara St., Niagara Falls, NY.  He was an engineer for Johnson & Clifford Co. of Niagara Falls.  He was married and listed no history of military service.  He was of medium height and build with brown eyes, dark brown hair, and slightly bald.

:) Thanks guys! great info! Still getting my head around it, I'm starting to think that Thomas McCairns may have married twice, or we are looking at 2 different Thomas Mccairns here! I have him marrying 'Catherine[a] Atterby in 1896 she could have died and James Atterby McCairns could have been named in memory of her? hmmmm, found a Thomas Mccaions [mistranscribed] on 1901, a proffesional Footballer that ties in well...... Anyone have access to 1901 that could help or does this new info shed anymore light?

 Thanks,
    Boris.

Boris,

Have you read Hugh Verity's book, "They flew by moonlight"? That with give you a good insight into the exploites of this SOE ferry pilot, this decription does not describe him well. You will also find his bent nose cone in the IWM in London.

He previously flew with 616 squadron, a fighter squadron, which included Douglas Badder.

He was shot down on 6th July 1941 and joined my Father, ending up at Stalag IXc, Bad Sulza, when on 20th November 1941 with my Father. they made their first escape attempt only to be recaptured shortly afterwards.

He eventually escaped with another prisoner on 22nd January 1942 and returned to England, being one of only a very few escapees who was allowed to fly service again.

I know upon his return, he made contact up to his death with my Father's family but l have no records of this. These could be in the family somewhere.

I have sent my E Mail address to you under a private message.

Regards,

Nick
